Bound 3rook on January 31, 1968. In attendance were: P. Bettoli S. Crawford Darrell D. Davis RP.. Fraser Henry H. Xuhlken V. Laskoski A. Matlin D. Neil W. OBrien R. Olson W. Schwingen P, Stavros F. Sweeney A. INDUSTRIAL INSULATIONS: 1. Inhibited Calsilite - Research advised that recent work with a reduced inhibitor level has resulted in a product which will pass the 6 day test at a considerable cost saving. Based on a ''<3,000,000 list, if all Calsilite were inhibited, the cost would be $30,000 lower per year than a 1056 inhibitor level. We are receiving small, odd sized orders for Calsilite SS. It was agreed that we would fill these orders and all future orders with the lower inhibitor level formulation. We will not advise DuPont of the reduction in inhibitor level. As we produce this product, we will continue to run the 6 day test. Further work is also planned on lower cost formulations. Labels are being printed for Calsilite SS. Sales will review the need for a Calsilite SS-Armstrong label. 2. Elimination of Canvas - The current plan is to supply Calsilite pipe covering standard product with kraft bands and no canvas. Canvas would be supplied on special order. This plan may be affected by the fact that Owens Corning has announced a lt% price increase for Kaylo. They are going to offer their product without canvas at a lower price. Before proceeding further. Manufacturing will make a cost comparison of Calsilite with and without canvas related to the new price schedule. (At this point in the meeting, we digressed to a discussion of the high manufacturing costs of Calsilite. It was decided that ranufacturing will develop a history of Calsilite production by sized comparing block and pipe covering actual production to available capacity.) fl- 0 9 2 0 /Qr MICH08324 (2) 3. Mildew Resistant Adhesive - Research has developed an adhesive formulation with a mildewcide added. The added cost of this material will be approx imately lUOO/year. Manufacturing will adopt this formulation at once and Research will continue to test this material for mildew resistance. ht Reduction in Density - Work done to date with additives to reduce density have not been successful. Work is continuing. .5 Extended Leg Pipe Covering - Mew equipment is being installed which will allow for the cutting of this material. 6. Fire Doors - Mr. Henry had made several preliminary calls on fire door manufacturers. It appears that fibreglas, mineral wool and calcium sili cate insulations are used in fire doors-. The temperature requirements are probably higher than 1250F. (current, temperature limit of Calsilite). Fibreglas is the most popular material. Lighter materials are desirable because lighter door hardware is therefore needed. It is still not clear whether there is a fire door volume which would justify a research program. Further market research is necessary, Mr. Henry will have the salesmen survey the market with specific questions. 7. Waterproof Calsilite - Research had done some preliminary work tiiich in dicated that a silicone additive could be used in the formulation which would impart water resistance to Calsilite. The added cost per year would be approximately $800,000. Because of the cost, there is no interest. Project dropped. B. ASBESTOS PAPER AMD MILLBOARD PRODUCTS; 1. Product G-700 - There continues to be a great deal of interest in high density latex bound gasketing, A preliminary attempt at matching a McCord spec, was made last year and the product is being evaluated. There is some concern that McCord may be testing this product to the wrong speci fication. Sales will clarify this point. There is no doubt that some me'ns of producing a high density sheet is going to be needed in the long run in order to become a factor in this market. Continued research work is needed to develop a laboratory formul-tion^which will have all of the desirable properties when calandered; At that point, a decision will be needed on additional calendering; Research is having difficulty devoting the necessary time to this project because of other more pressing projects. The market potential of this line of products is believed to be $50,CXX3,000/year. 2. Armstrong's Special Red Gasketing - This product falls into the same catagorj except that, in this case, the specifications call for a product with a density within the capability of our #1 machine.- Further laboratory work is needed to develop a satisfactory formulation.- MICH08325 (3) 3# Graphite Coated 0-600 - There are steps underway at Erie to determine tKe best place to apply the graphite coating required by McCord. At this point, some equipment modifications are underway to allow us to prepare sample material during the next G-600 run. It. Increased Density G-600 - Felt Products is interested in a density increase in G-600 along with a reduction in fluid absorption. We are unable to accomplish this on the #1 machine because of the lack of the necessary equipment to do the job* We can obtain the desired product by pressing the sheet off the machine. This will increase the product cost from approximately 1190/ton to $21*5/ton. Samples are available which will be submitted to the customer for evaluation, 5. Carey1 a Product for Spiral Wound Gaskets - No progress reported on this project to date. 6* Homasote - Samples of neoprene asbestos paper laminated to Homasote ceilii panels have been prepared by the customer for Underwriter's testing. We will be advised of their progress. 7* Asbestos Flooring Felts - Sales have been awaiting information from Research and Manufacturing before contacting Bonafide & Mannington Mllle again. It was agreed that samples representing current production quality will be offered to Mannington as typical of the type product we can offer at this time. Bonafide has a requirement involving a 15 day oven test wherein our material discolors slightly. Although we question the value of this test, we will determine if some other variations, including the Textile Chemicals Division latex will pass the test. 8, Low Organic Asbestos Paper - Several customers are evaluating samples of this product. Sales has nothing new to report at this tine. 9. Sodium Silicate in Asbestos paper - H. H. Robertson - The Technical birector of H. b. Robertson, (Mr. H. E. Kennedy) has written suggesting that we consider the use of quaternary anaonium silicate as the binder in our asbestos paper used by Robertson, Research has contacted the silicate supplier for samples and will write Mr. Kennedy. 10, Tar Saturated Pipe Line Felt - The problem of color depth and uniformity can 'be temporarily solved by adding Jt carbon black to the asbestos paper furnish. This will be done on all pipe line felt effective immediately. In the long run, improvements must be made to the saturator to solve this problem. 11, Chopped Glass Addition to Asbestos Felt - The new, low cost chopped glass furnish has been altered to improve asphalt saturating rate. This in volved the replacement of J-M Paperbestos #5 asbestos fibre with Vermont 7D-3 fibre. This furnish will be run whenever 7D fibre is available and a laboratory investigation started to find a J-M fibre that can be used in place of the Vermont 7D-3. c MICH08326
