in terms o f the median tolerance lim it (TLcq) , the nominal
c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f the chemijcal in Water w'h ic h c a u s e s 56 p e r c e n t
response (death) under th^ test conditiqps-during a specified
tim e i n t e r v a l . The p r e d i c t i o n o f a TL^0 v a l u e , and i t s 95%
confidence in te rv al, was ta'sd on conversion of the concentrations
tested and the corresponding observed .percent m ortalities to
logs and probits respectively, and the subsequent mathematical
c a l c u l a t i o n o f a ' Iiiidir`/ir ^ ^ |^ - -'e q u 8 ,' o |} . -The t o x i c i t y
o f th e c h em ical t e s t e d was e v a lu a te d under s t a t i c b io a s s a y
conditions for a 96-hour period.

The rainbow tro u t used in these te s ts were obtained from a commercial f i s h hatchery in M assach u setts and had a mean w eig ht of 1 .3 g and a mean le n g th o f 58 mm. The t e s t population was held in the laboratory hatchery f a c i l i t i e s io r a t le a s t 30 days p rio r to te s tin g and during th is pei led m o r t a l i t y was <2%. S t a t i c b ic a s s a y s were con d ucted in 5- g a l l o n glass vessels held in constant,temperature water baths at
(~ 1*0). The v essels were not aera te d , and there was a single in tro d u ctio n of the te s t compound in to the te s t v essels. A solvent control, u tiliz in g the g reatest amount of isopropyl alcohol contained in any te s t vessel, was conducted. Fish were acclimated to the te st system containing reconstituted water as the standard diluent for a t least 2k hours prior to testin g . ien fis h were exposed in each t e s t v e s s e l. The r e c o n s t i tu t e d w ater used in th e t e s t system was prepared cy adding the fo llo w in g chemicals to deionized water:

The pH of th e s t a n d a r d d i l u e n t was 7 .1 , and the m ethyl o rang e a l k a l i n i t y was 35 ppm as CaCOy D is s o lv e d oxygen values for the various test vessels ranged from 6.? i n i t i a l l y to 5*3 m g/l a t t.he end of the t e s t s .
