This, our Twentieth Anniversary Celebration Meeting was called to order by President Peele with remarks suitable to the occasion. Each person was asked to stand and identify himself and his company affiliation. 2. The minutes of the last meeting were presented for reading however, since all members had received copies prior to this meeting it was moved by Mr. J.A. Bettes,Jr.,to dispense with the reading. The motion was seconded by Mr. J.T. Griffis, and agree ment was unanimous. 3. The Financial Report was presented by Treasurer J.A. Brown,Jr., who stated that the annual audit of the Institute's books,for the year ending September 9, 1964,had been made by Mr. C.Yv. Briggs, of Raybestos-Manhattan's accounting department,and that Mr. Briggs had written to President Peele stating that the report as present ed at this meeting"Presents fairly the financial position of the Institute on September 9, 1964." Mr. fc.S. Hough moved to accept the Treasurer's Report,seconded by Mr. I.Barnett,and agreement was unanimous. The report is made a part of these minutes. 4. The next part of the meeting was devoted to reports by the Chairmen of the working committees, namely; Mr.L.C. Vllliams for the Air Hygiene & Mfg. Committee; Mr. J,\K. Christenbury for the Sales Promotion Committee; Mr, Wm. Maaskant for the Technical Committee, and Mr.I.Barnett for the Fiber Testing Committee. Included in their remarks was a review of the work done in the last year, projects currently worked on, and future objectives. Their formal reports are attached to these minutes. 5. Mr.Geo.F.Jenkins, Senior Vice President,Asbestos Corporation, presented the report for the Fiber Committee. This was a most comprehensive review of world conditions in respect to the prod uction,market conditions,and potential supplies of asbestos fibre. Our members were highly appreciative for the opportunity to hear Mr. Jenkins,as he is eminently qualified to speak on the subject of asbestos fibre and its world markets. mites - General Meeting Page -3- 7. Dr. Lewie J. Cralley,of the U.S.Public Health Service,spoke about his survey work in member's plants. Said he was quite pleased with the progress of "the environmental study".and the cooperation that he has received. Mr. Cralley said that-an attemp will be made to adopt standard classification for X-Ray studies.* A panel of 70 or 80 radiologists is being assembled to do this. Dr. Cralley will give some data on the results of hi3 survey todate,at the Conference"Biological Effects of Asbestos" to be held October 19-21, 1964,at the V-aldorf-Astoria Hotel. 8. President Peele informed the members that the Board of Gov ernors'had approved the Budget for the Institute for 1965,in the amount of $8125.00. Further that A.T.I. Member companies have named the the following as their representatives on the Board of Governors for the ensuing year: J.A. Brown,Jr.,Raybestos-Manhattan; J.T. Griffis,H.K. PorterCo.,Inc, W.S. Rough, Johns-Manville Corp.;T.C. McCluskey,Tallman-McCluskey Fabrics Co.,S.J. Peele,Jr. U.S. Rubber Company: J.L. Rainey, American Asbestos Textile Corp. Also, that Mr. W.S. Hough,Chairman of the Nominating Committee, had submitted to the Board of Governors at the October 8th meet ing a slate of officers for the Institute,to serve in the coming year, composed of: For President - J.A. Brown,Jr. - Raybestos-Man.,Inc For Vice Pres. - J.L. Rainey - Amer., Asb. Tex. Corp For Treasurer - B.A. Schuman - Johns-Manville Corp. and that the Board of Governors had voted unanimously to accept the recommendations of the Nominating Committee,and the above were duly elected to office.' 9. President Peele then introduced the new officers. 10. The next part of the meeting was in charge of Mr.J.A.Bettes Chairman of the Twentieth Anniversary Celebration committee,who reviewed the progress of the Institute during its first twenty years,and then called on the following men to address the meeting Mr.J.F.D. Pohrbach,President,Oaybestos-Fanhattan,Inc.,who was Chairman of the Organizational Meeting held on November 16,1944. Mr. C.H. Carlough,first president of A.T.I.,1945-1946. Mr. G.S. Fabel, President of A.T.I.,1949-1950 Mr.Geo.W. Smith, Bell Asbestos Mines,Ltd. Dr. M.C. Shaw.Research Fellow and dxec.Director A.T.1.1946-1963. Minutes - General Meeting -continued Page -4- All of these gentlemen proved to be extremely interesting speak ers. They praised the work of the Institute and its accomplish ments todate,and wished it continuing success. It was generally agreed that this portion of the meeting was an outstanding success. At this time Mr. Bettes announced that a souvenir of the occasion in the form of a silver tray,size 7 3/4 x 5 3/4", inscribed "ASBESTOS TEXTILE INSTITUTE, TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY, 1944-1964 " would be given to all those present,and these would be distributed during the luncheon. 11. President Peele then read a list of twenty names of indivuals who had received special invitations to attend our Twentieth Anniversary Celebration,and who had written or wired their great regret they could not attend, and extending best wishes to the Institute for its continued success,and their sincere greetings to the members. Included were letters from England,Prance, Canada, and the U.S.A. 12. President Peele then introduced the Guest Speaker, Mr.H.B. (Doc) Sharer, of the United States Rubber Company,New York City. Eis 'subject was: "What makes a Star Salesman a STAR.?" This proved to be a most entertaining and instructive talk, and many complimentary remarks concerning it were made bt the members. 13. President Peele announced the next meeting would be held on February 10-12,1965,at the Carolina Hotel,Pinehurst,N.C. The Carolina is rated as one of the country's finest resort hotels, and Pinehurst itself has been nicknamed "Golftown,U.S.A." It is adjacent to five 18 hole golf courses,and has two 18 hole putt ing courses,and a driving rabge. Other recreational activities such as skeet shooting,tennis, horseback riding,etc.,are also available,and it is hoped that our attendance at this meeting will be large. 14. The Social Hour and Luncheon following the meeting was most enjoyable. A photographer took pictures of the newly elected officers, also a group of six former presidents of A.T.I.,namely Messers Carlough,Fabel,Peele,Hough,Griffis,and Bettes. 15. At the end of the luncheon Mr. f.'.S. Hough,on behalf of the membe's of the Institute,presented retiring President Peele with a beautiful ATMOS Clock, in appreciation of his excellent leadership of A.T.I. during the past two years. Mr. Peele res ponded with appropriate remarks,and thanked the members for the gift,saying that he had enjoyed the opportunity to be of service to A.T.I., and that he would continue to work for its success in the cominf years. 16.
