MACHINE TOOLS should be in accordance with manufactur ers' recommendations Disks and wheels taken out of long storage should be given the "ring" test, followed by a check for rec ommended speed, and a speed test on the machine on which they are to be mounted Checking the speed of vitrified wheels is especially important--some are designed only for low-speed use.

INDUSTRIAL NOISE Variability in the test environment is caused mainly by changing ambient noise levels in the testing area Unless test areas are specially treated to reduce ambient noise levels below certain specified values, the measured thresholds of persons with normal hearing may be masked The usual ambient noises m test environments are predominantly low frequency sounds, and most of the masking is at 1,000 c and below It is usually easy to detect masked low fre quency thresholds on audiograms made m poorly sound-treated environments These audiograms show normal or near normal hearing at 1,000 c and hearing losses as large as 10 db at 250 c and at 500 c Thresholds at 1,000 c may show the effect of masking if the ambient levels are mod erately high.
