RE: Shanghai Health Study Annual Meeting - Opportunity for Investigators to meet
with Government Officials, etc.
I approve of the expenditure given our need for effective outreach. This looks like a great opportunity for the interaction.

Brian, Don, Mike, and Zach,
Please read Lynne's note below describing the opportunity to have the SHS investigators meet with government officials, etc in conjunction with the annual meeting this year.
This note is being sent to request your approval for $10,000 to fund this event. Details are still sketchy, but we need commitment to fund before proceeding with planning. Please respond by cob June 15 by using the voter buttons at the top. Lack of a response will indicate approval. Questions may be addressed to either Lynne or myself.
Regards, Patsy

Patsy: At the Oversight Committee we discussed ways to implement the idea of taking advantange of the PI's presence in Washington to brief agencies and others initerested in benzene research. One idea was to have a small meeting or symposium. That has the advantage of being able to include all who are interested in one meeting/session. We talked about asking Jerry Rice if he would be interested in hosting/chairing such an event. This is to report on the results of some work along those lines.
Jerry was quite enthusiastic about this idea and would welcome the opportunity to host. Informal discussions with some of the investigators indicate they would be interested also. There are a number of logistical decisions to be made--before or after the meeting, exactly who gets invited, etc., etc. However before going to far on that, we need to ensure the Oversight Committee approves the budget expenditure that would be necessary to make this happen. Jerry looked into having the event at the conference facility on Georgetown University's campus. He has been to events there and recommends it highly. The cost is about $90-100 per person which covers food, room, AV support, etc. If there were 100 attendees, that would be about $10,000. Based on my expereince (and some others I've checked with here) that is competitive with other facilities in the Downtown Washington area. Jerry would also like to look to Bruce Jarnot for help on this.
While I realize a lot needs to be worked out on this, we do need to decide whether we are willing to cover the expenses of this meeting before going much further. The Georgetown facility, or any other we would want to use, is already filling up for November. Do you think the Oversight Committee would approve spending about $10,000 to host this event? Confirming the event and arranging the details would then be left to Jerry Rice, who might also want some input from the Technical Committee.
