'l"he presence of the borer, is indicated by the
exudation from the base of tlie tree of a gummy
brownish mas.*, which !t> damp weather becomes
gelatinous. The attach of the moth often
results in the yrolilH anJ premature blossoming
of young tree*.
Probably the best preventive measure is
"mounding** which is simply dragging up the
soil to a height of about eight or ten inches
around the base of the tree. This should be done
about July 1*1 and kept up until September 1st
The whole atmosphere of this house is made doubly
which practically covers the egg-laying season, in the latitude of New York. This causes the

attractive--and kept so--by the proper use
-- preventing the young la/vx from entering the bark much below the top of the mound. At the
of Sherwin-Williams Paint--SWP
S W P is rhe most durable and most economical paint that can be made. It is thoroughly mixed and ground in scientific proportions--pure lead* pure zinc and pure linseedoif, combined with the necessary driers and pigments. It spreads easily and covers the greatest
r.um!cruf square feet to the gallon. And it is made in colors, as well as black and white.

removed the iarv:u mar lx: easily destroyed.
A similar method is to bind strips of tarred
paper or sheathing around the trunk front a
point tun 01 time inches betow the surface of
the soil to a height of about one fooe. A com
bination of these two methods probably offers
the best protection. The application ol a w*sh
to the trunk of the tree is often relied upon.
Care must be taken tu avoid worthless amJ
injurious wushu*. J. H. Hale, one of the most
successful peach orchardists in the country,
use* the following:
Two quarts of soap, one haU pint of crude
carbolic acid and two ounces of Paris green,
thoroughly mixed with a bucketful of water.
Sufficient Umc and clay should be added to make
a thick paste.
Other orchardists have found gas tar very
effective, although there is danger of harming
the trees with this wash.
Of course any measure of prevention should
be put into operation before the egg-laying
season commences and kept up until it is past,
for if the borers have once penetrated beneath
the bark washes and mounding are useless;
and the only cure is 10 din out the borers. This
is usually done in ihe spring when the borers
arc large mid easily found and before the cocoons
arc formed.
