Re: Epidemiology Study from Union Carbide
This telefax is in regards to the epidemiology study conducted by Union Carbide, entitled ''Mortality Due to Pancreatic and Lymphopoietic Cancers in Chlorohydrin Production Workers". A draft copy of the study report was sent to the Panel on October 5, 1992.
You may recall that the report implicated ethylene dichloride as causing pancreatic cancer in the workers. Tom Robinson has suggested that the Panel communicate with Union Carbide regarding this conclusion, specifically that dichloryl ethyl ether, a co-product identified in the study, may be responsible for the cancer finding. Tom notes the following items for consideration:
the inhalation study with ethylene dichloride conducted by Maltoni did not show carcinogenicity; pancreatic cancer has not been identified in other EDC studies; a compound of similar structure, dichloryl methyl ether, is a known human carcinogen; and dichloryl ethyl ether has been classified as a genotoxic compound.
If the Panel is interested in responding to Union Carbide's report with the above arguments, please let me know. Jane Teta, one of the study authors, has already submitted the manuscript for consideration in a journal. If the manuscript is published, we may want to investigate submitting a formal response to the report. In addition, because there have been TSCA 8(e) and 8(d) letters submitted on this report's findings, communications with EPA may also be in order.
