subject Furan Piping Proposal for Closed Process Sewer Underground Piping
The closed process sewer system has been ready for start-up since February, 1982 excluding the underground piping. The furan underground piping network appears to have extensive damage as a result of improper installation followed by ground vibration and movement of heavy equipment near the underground piping. In order to start-up the closed process sewer, it is recommended to have the entire underground piping network re-installed under the supervision of a knowledgeable furan. pipe manufacturer with experience in furan piping install ations .
A meeting was held in May, 1983 with a representative from Ershigs Corp. and plant engineering and maintenance personnel. This meeting was to inform the plant why Ershigs believed that furan piping should be re-installed in the closed process sewer underground piping service instead of teflon lined FRP piping (which we originally asked Ershigs to quote on). Ershigs stated that che furan piping is not only cheaper, it is a better material for the closed process sewer service. Ershigs explained that the reason for the extensive damage to the present furan piping network is probably from not curing the piping properly and not handling and installing the piping properly. Plant maintenance personnel described some of the previous installer's practices and agreed with Ershigs that the installation was not done properly. Ershigs then explained the proper methods of curing, handling, and installation with an emphasis on ground packing around the pipe and fabrication of pipe joints.
If the closed process sewer system is to be started up, the underground piping network must be repaired or replaced. Repair of this extensive piping net work was initiated by maintenance but was stopped due to the man-hours required for such specialized repair. It is recommended to pursue replacement of the piping network with new furan piping and have the handling and installation carefully supervised by a knowledgeable company such as Ershigs.
