Removal of Asbestos
1. While removing the protective jacket or coating, it will be necessary to exercise caution to avoid the emission of airborne fibers. Respirators shall be worn during this step of removal.
2. If the insulation has been identified as asbestos, then the proper protective equipment, as described above, must be worn before removal can continue.
3. If the insulation has been identified as asbestos, wet the insulation completely prior to removal to prevent the emission of airborne fibers. Insure that the protective jacket is not removed for work other than where removal can be done as soon as practical.
4. Wet or cover unprotected ends of the asbestos insulation while the job is in progress. Replacement of the insulation should be completed as soon as practical with non-asbestos insulation.
5. Red "Do Not Enter" barricade tape should be.used to seal off the area where work will be performed to prevent entry. Approved OSHA signs should be attached to tape so that they are visible from all points of access. Signs should be washed before returning to storage and tape should be disposed of with asbestos.
6. Protective clothing and equipment MUST be worn by ANYONE inside barricaded area at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS.
7. The area within the barricade should be kept wet at all times.
8. Disposable ground cover should be used over gravel areas or other locations where cleanup of fibers is impossible.
9. Nondisposable rubber boots and respirators, after filter removal, are to be collected and thoroughly washed.
10. Bag and seal the insulation in plastic bags marked "Asbestos Only"- CMC 071366). Bags must be removed from the work area as soon as each is filled, and deposited in the dumpster designated for asbestos.
11. The disposal of asbestos containing material will be coordinated through the Envirorfmental Control Department.
12. Other asbestos containing material, gasketing, and packing will be treated as the above steps require.
13. Wire wheel buffers will "NEVER" be used to remove asbestos gasketing.
