The following information was obtained verbally from Nucor Tubular Products (Nucor) unless otherwise noted.
Process Description: Nucor operates a steel tube manufacturing facility. Steel coils are fed through the slitter then ran through the mill where they are bent, welded, and sawed into the desired tube dimensions. During the tube manufacturing process, coolant is constantly running though the mill from a pit underneath. After the steel is cut, some products receive a rust preventative spray.
Staff Interview: In late 2016 Nucor acquired Independence Tube. The only equipment change was the addition of a bundler. At this location, Nucor has 112 employees and operates two shifts, five days per week.
At the time of the tour walk through the mill was down due to part changeouts, which typically occurs one or two times per day. Besides mill maintenance and changeouts, the mill is always operating when the facility is operating.
Nucor has permitted emission limits on the coolant and rust preventative spray. In 2019 or 2020 Nucor changed the coolant to a coolant with lower VOC.
TOUR INFORMATION EPA Tour of the Facility: Yes
