At that time, we can ask for names and phone numbers of SO Managers. I spent some time with our SO Manager, Andrew Roberts last week and he is on-board from the perspective that the clinical lab is an SO opportunity. Andrew feels it is appropriate to begin engaging our SO folks in a conversation regarding options and developing a plan to move forward. He is willing to organize the SO folks in an effort to assist. He already knows the players. We might want to think about an on-boarding conference call with the SO Managers. We could take them through a short overview of the Study so they have a common level of understanding of our aspirations and deliverables and outline the issue for which we need their assistance. We will need to think about governance if we elect to let them really begin engaging on developing a path forward. There will be several issues to work... (e.g.how to keep Otto and Richard involved and engaged but not controlling, keeping the OC involved, etc). I'm just rambling but we might want Lynn to be a part of the SO work so that we have communications tied in to the effort. -----Original Message----From: Clegg, Patsy M SCC-CHSE-PC [mailto:patsy.clegg@shell.com] Sent: Monday, August 30, 2004 6:49 AM To: Johnston, Michael D. Subject: RE: China BCSD Logistics for the Meeting Mike, Looks like we are beginning to get key contacts identified. Let me know what I can do from Shell. I will be in Europe in October. The external affairs people are trying to arrange a meeting for me with the Royal Dutch Shell head person on SO in the Hague. Need a clear message. Shell COP and DuPont were the only Energy IChemical companies I remember being present from this side of the Pacific, but the Chinese delegation had relevant members and the connection has been established. The USBCSD connection with the China BCSD could certainly be leveraged and Andy Mangan of the USBCSD would be very keen to get a tangible result out his organizations services, he needs a "win" to help build momentum and this could provide it. I agree with Joe Machado, Chris Holmes (ex number 3 at the EPA by the way) would certainly be all over this in a heartbeat and would be a very good resource given his EPA background and long term affection for China, where he has lived in the past. Managing things through Andy rather than Chris might help things move at a more measured pace but Chris would certainly be invaluable. I know both of them well and can easily broker appropriate conversations. Andrew -----Original Message----From: Johnston, Michael D. Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 3:35 PM To: Roberts, Andrew D. Subject: FW: China BCSD Logistics for the Meeting Patsy is the Shell representative on the SHS Consortium. Since you were at this meeting, I thought I would pass this along since it might be a forum for working through the laboratory issue. -----Original Message----From: Clegg, Patsy M SCC-CHSE-PC [mailto:patsy.clegg@shell.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 3:30 PM To: Johnston, Michael D. Subject: FW: China BCSD Logistics for the Meeting WOW \ \ \ This could be our "in". I talked with Joe Machado, our former (just barely) SO Manager, and he gave me a long list of contacts. Chris Holmes is the director of the Shell Center for SO at Rice University. Joe suggested that I not contact him now, because he will grab hold and run with it, but might be an invaluable asset after we get more organized. SH ELL-MCCLU RG-063484 Joe also suggested that this is a Chinese political issue and will probably have to be worked through the Chinese political system and the Chinese academic community. We might be able to work it internally within the consortium member companies as an SO project, but that it would definitely be through political and academic channels in China. Just thought that I would share this preliminary info with you now.
