Williams Date November 18, 1981 Originating Dec: IH/EP Area s_oeot Dust Monitoring in Construction Department Insulation Shop Institute Plant Gentlemen: The Institute Plant Industrial Hygiene group has completed monitoring of airborne dust in the Construction Department, Insula tion Shop, during the month of October 1981. During the monitoring KAYLO-IO and perlite insulation materials were being handled. Four teen personal samples, one source sample, and fifteen area samples were collected in the area of band saws where three-inch thick blocks of insulating materials were being sawed. The samples collected were analyzed by gravimetric technique for determining the total dust contents. The results of the monitoring are shown in the attach ment . The Threshold Limit Value (TLV) for perlite assigned by the A.C.G.I.H. is 10 mg/m3. This value is equivalent to a TLV standard for the total nuisance dust. In general, the air levels of the dust were found to be lower than the TLV. The on-site personnel complained of personal discomfort as a result of drying of the skin and the nasal membrane when working with the perlite materials. It was observed that a considerable amount of dust became airborne in the process of stacking and general handling of the sawed blocks. While there is in existance a ventilation facility for con trolling the dust generated from the sawing operations, there is no such facility for controlling the dust generated during stacking IOV. UCC 016537 -2- 11/18/81 and general handling of the material. We believe that a down draft ventilation system for controlling the dust generated during Cleanihg of the sawed blocks would be advantageous. It is recom mended that the Industrial Hygiene group be consulted when consider ations are given for installing such a system. Please inform the results of the Survey to employees who were monitored. If I can be of any assistance in this matter, please give me a call at extension 3750. Very truly yours, MAP/sc Attachment Manhar A.
