The equipment consists of a vaporiser coll, three staialesa ataal lead filled geo fired pots and two fractionating columns, all la aeries. Baasol la continuously vaporised in cha vaporiser coil sad heated to the pyrolysis taparaura ai it la bubbled through the moltan lead in the three pots. The uareacted Benrol and the reaction products. Biphenyl, Terphanyl and Bydruga peas through two orifice plates sad into the stripping col tan. The super heat in the gsa drives the uareacted Bensol up the coluan, with the Bydrogan, where it Is condensed and returned to the feed tank. The Hydrogen, saturated with Bensol, is coolsd and conprassed to renova the raaindsr of the Bansol. This Bensol is recycled through the process with fresh Bensol. The underflow, flows by gravity to a exude Biphenyl storage tank. The units era oparatsd between 10 end 301 converaion by regulating the con-

The pot pressuree rang.i fron 60 to 100 psig on the No. 1 Preheater, to 30 to 70 paig on the converter. The higher pressures are encountered when the unite are nearly plugged. The crude Biphenyl, which is approximately 75Z Biphenyl, 1SZ Terphaayl, end 10Z Bensol is charged hatch-wise to a fractional distillation unit and the Biphenyl is distilled off. Haet for the distillation is provided by cir culating the charge through a coil In a gas firad furnecs. Pour distillation cuts ere made: (l) s Bensol cut, - Co recover cha Bensol that wee left in the underflow fron the first colunn, (2) s heeds cut which is a mixture ei Bensol and Biphenyl, (3) a Biphenyl cut end, (4) a tells cut which Is a mixture of Biphenyl and Terphenyl. The haada and Calls cut srs recycled to the next distillation charge. The still residue, Santowax C, consists essentially of Ortho, Mete, and Pars Terphenyls and certain higher boiling eoopouade. It Is ptaped to storage for non in tho Saatowax X procase.

SECTION C EQUIPMENT
Thera ara 12 Biphenyl units of approxlnately equal capacity. Each unit conaiaca of a pipa coll vi"orlser locatad in tha flua gas exhaust stack, three stalnLasa scaal pots partially filled vith molten laad and suspandad in a firebrick setting for burning natural gaa, and a fractionating colu vith a condansar and split flow box. Tha pots ara 24" O.D. x 72*' long, with a dishad bottoa.
Tha units ara nuabarad 2 through 13, thara having baan a No. I unit at ona tiaa. Tha prasant nuabar of units ware erected in five installments. Nos. 2 and 3 having been erected at different tines, Nos. 4 and 5 together. Nos. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 together, and Nos. 11, 12 and 13 together. These groups are all slightly different in some details. There are, however, only two fundamentally different types of units. Nos. 4 and 3 differing froa the rest in that one of the preheater pots is repla-.ed by a shell and tube heat exchanger. Although the hast exchanger effected a gas savings as predicted, it proved impractical due to carbon and tars fouling tha tubas, and the idea was abandoned on tha subsequent units.
A larger converter pot (sojourn pot) has been Installed on No. 11 unit to provide additional sojourn ties. This additional ties results in a lower temperature for a given conversion as compared to the other units. Tha heat Input to the unit remains at a maximum and this extra heat is utilised by the addition of more Benrol feed tr the unit.
The reduced pyrolysis tas^aracures made possible by the largsr pot result in:
1. A 10*151 production increase,
2. Reduction in gas consumption per pound of Biphenyl produced,
3. Reduction of pot failures and maintenance cost,
4. Reduced carbon formation, thus permitting better operating
efficiency of the unit,
5. Reduced lead carry over has been observed on the unit equipped
with the sojourn pot.

Sample* of rha gaa leaving the Biphenyl coavarcara are takaa daily and the coaveraion rata determined by apacific gravity. The percent caaraaraiaa la regulated to produce the required amount* of both Blpheayl and Santowax. (Sea Chart Fig. 7)
The percent coaveraion 1* regulated by changing the converter pat temperature. The converter pot ia uaually operated at a caparature of approximately 780C to give a coaveraion of 15-17X. The temperature required to get thia converaion change* at the pot* begin to plug vith carbon, eauaing lncraaaad aojourn tine due to the increaaed preaaure. No. 1 and No. 2 preheater* are uaually operated at approximately 490C and 670*0 raapactlvaly.
When the preaaure on No. 1 preheater pot raachaa 100 lba. the unit la ahut
down and cleaned out. At thia point the preaaure on No. 2 preheater will be
approximately 80 lba. and on the converter approximately 60 lba.

The unit* are uaually operated with a 60-701 reflux, with 901 being aet aa a maTlum. The reflux cool a the vapor* leaving the top plate below 100C. If 901 reflux doe* not cool the top plat* vapor* below 100C, then it i* neceaaary to cut Che feed.
Biphenyl freeaing point* are u*jd aa a control point for the Biphenyl dietillacirrr cut. The freeaing point la to be 68.bC minima before this cut ia taken.
