Anniston Plant Recertified with Top OSHA Safety Rating Employees at the Anniston, Alabama, plant were honored on July 10 by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for remaining one of the safest plants in the nation. Originally selected into OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) as a Star site in May 1993, the Anniston plant was commended for continuing to improve safety and health conditions. The plant also celebrated more than six months recordable injury free. Charles Anderson, assistant administrator for OSHA's Region IV, presented Blake Hamilton, Anniston site manager, with the official recertification as one of OSHA's VPP Star plants. Also present for the ceremony were John Hunter, Chemicals' chief operating officer designate; Dennis Cavner, Chemicals' Operational Excellence team leader; and Jim Sams, vice president for Region V of the International Chemical Workers Union. "Our employees are very proud to again be designated as a VPP Star site," Hamilton explains. "We know it must be our top priority every day to assure that this is a safe workplace for our employees and our neighbors." In order to be recertified as a "Star"site, the plant demonstrated its commitment to safety and health during rigorous inspections by OSHA officials. Included were checks of records, reviews of compliance programs and lengthy interviews with employees.

Dear Anniston Employees:
Congratulations on becoming the first Solutia site to reach one year without a recordable injury or illness. This is a significant accomplishment that clearly requires involvement by everyone in the plant. I know you have worked hard all year to stay focused on safety in order to reach this milestone.
When I visited Anniston in July to help you celebrate six months without a recordable injury and to recognize you for being the first Solutia plant to receive your second VPP Star, I experienced personally why your safety performance is outstanding. Your commitment and energy around safety was clear.
As you've probably heard me say many times, the safety and health of Solutia's people remains a top priority for our company. It is an integral part of how we conduct our business and manage our performance. We have a long history of great performance in this area. I expect Solutia to continue to lead our industry in providing a safe and healthful place in which to work.
In 1998 your site will begin implementing a behavior based safety program. This pro active program has a proven track record of driving positive behaviors, which ultimately prevent injuries and illnesses. I'm confident it will help you maintain your focus on safety and your outstanding track record.
Again, I congratulate you on your accomplishment. And I challenge you to become the first Solutia site to reach two years without a recordable injury.
Sincerely,
John Hunter President and COO
