SECTION IV
Complete Specifications for Finishing New "Unpainted" Surfaces
General Conditions
Scop* of Work -- the painting contractor is to furnish all material, labor, tools and equipment necessary to do the complete job.
Workmanship -- all work is to be done by able, skilled mechanics. No paint or varnish is to be applied until the preceding coat is thoroughly dry and hard.
No exterior painting is to be done during rainy, damp or frosty weather. No interior painting is to be done on new construction until the building thoroughly dries out. After sufficient drying, enamels and varnishes are to be sanded lightly between coats and dusted before next coat is applied.
All prime coats must be tinted to approximate the color of the finish coat.
All nail holes are to be filled after priming with putty tinted to match finish color.
Materials -- all materials used under the painting contract are to be O'Brien Finishes, delivered on the job in sealed containers.
Any necessary thinning or mixing is to be done on the job, in exact accordance with the manufacturer's directions, as printed on the package. Material is to be applied per direc tions on label.
Any tinting or color matching is to be done on the job and architect's approval is necessary before application is be gun.
Preparation of Surface -- the painting contractor is en tirely responsible for the finished job and therefore, he shall not start any part of it until the surfaces are in proper condition.
If the painting contractor considers any surface so unsuit able for proper finishing that it cannot be corrected by slight sanding, he shall notify the architect in writing and shall not apply any material until the surface has been made satisfactory or until the architect instructs him to proceed.
All knots or sappy spots are to be given a prime coat of shellac (inside), or O'Brien's Knot Sealer (outside) before painting.
Old painted surfaces which are peeling and scaling are to be scraped and wire brushed before painting. Old paint is to be burned off on extremely bad surfaces.
Metal surfaces containing grease and oil are to be cleaned with turpentine or naphtha before painting.
Cement Floors -- Cement floors, next to the ground, should be tested for moisture by placing a blotter on the surface with a weight on it. Allow it to remain on the surfaces for sometime before removing. If the blotter shows evidences of moisture, the architect is to be notified and the painting held up until given his approval.
Hard troweled cement floors are to be etched with a solu tion of one part muriatic acid and three parts water. Mix ture is to be applied with an old broom -- one gallon for each 100 square feet. When bubbling stops, flush off with clear water and allow the surface to dry.
New Plaster -- must be thoroughly dry before painting. In doubtful instances, the architect is to be notified in writing before proceeding.
Protection of Property and Removal -- the painting contractor is responsible for the condition of the building in his charge. He shall protect adjacent work and material, as well as his own.
When the job is completed, he will remove all surplus ma terials and his equipment, and he will clean off misplaced paint, varnish or enamel -- leaving the premises in perfect, clean condition, acceptable to the architect.

Complete Specifications for "Repainting" All Types of Surfaces
EXTERIOR SURFACES
PREVIOUSLY PAINTED WOOD SIDING
Preparation -- if the house has peeled, try to find the source of trouble and correct it. Seal loose joints, im proper flashing, correct lack of venting, etc. Then, if possible, remove with blow torch all loose paint from areas where peeling has occurred. If cost of removal is prohibitive, wire brush peeling areas vigorously with a wire brush. Loose dirt should be dusted from all sur faces and any grease washed off completely.
Lsstreos Finish -- one coat of "75" or T.T.O. House Paint will suffice on clean surfaces in good condition. On "weathered" or dirty surfaces, a prime coat of either "75" House Paint Primer or T.T.O. Primer should pre cede the finish coat. A two coat job will be more satis factory and will prove more economical -- for long run durability.
Eggshell Finish -- for white or light tints, one or two coats of Eggshell Exterior Paint.
Clear Finish (high lustre) -- one or two coats of Ex terior Wood Finish, Clear. Note -- if wood is badly stained or darkened, the only way to renew it is to re move the old natural finish completely and then bleach the wood surface.
Stain Finish -- over previously stained siding, apply two coats of Shingle Stain. Two coats are recommended instead pf one for real economy.
Bright Trim Finish -- one or two coat of Trim and Trellis Colors.
ASBESTOS SHINGLES
Lnstrens Finish -- one coat of "75" or T.T.O. House Paint. If surfaces are badly weathered or extremely dirty prime with either "75" House Paint Primer or T.T.O. Primer before applying finish coat.
Eggshell Finish -- one or two coats of "75" Exterior Egg shell House Paint. Note -- if the shingles are extremely weathered and porous, substitute a prime coat of half and half "75" Exterior Eggshell Paint Reducer and "75" Exterior Eggshell House Paint for the initial coat in this specification.
STUCCO, BRICK, CONCRETE
Preparation -- wire brush the surface and remove loose dirt. Patch any cracks with mortar. Allow to dry and then spot coat the patches with Concrete and Stucco Paint Reducer.
Eggshell Finish -- one coat of "75" Exterior Eggshell House Paint will provide a satisfactory result on sur faces in good condition. Surfaces requiring two coats should be given a prime coat consisting of half and half "75" Exterior Eggshell Paint Reducer and "75" Exterior Eggshell House Paint.
Hat Finish -- on good previously painted surfaces one coat of Concrete & Stucco Paint will give a good result. On poor surfaces, the finish coat should be preceded with a prime coat consisting of half and half Concrete & Stucco Paint Reducer and Concrete & Stucco Paint.
WOOD SHINGLES

WOOD FLOORS
Colored Enamel Finish -- same specifications as above under "Concrete Floors."
Clear Finish -- two thin coats of Master Quick Spar Varnish.
INTERIOR SURFACES
WOODWORK, CABINETS, PANELING, TRIM
Preparation -- the old surfaces should be washed clean -- free of loose dirt, grease, oil or wax. All cracks, nail holes and defects should be patched with a good grade putty or plastic wood. Then sand the surface lightly with a 2-0 sandpaper. Before painting, remove any sanding dust by going over the surface with a duster or tack rag. Note -- when refinishing over old glossy surfaces and sanding isn't practical, wipe the surfaces, just be fore painting, with O'Brien's Tack-it. This will insure a proper bond and will eliminate chipping.
High Lustra Enamel Finish
a. Two Coat Work -- prime the surface with White Surfacer and finish with a coat of either Flexico,

Liquid-Lite (non-yellowing or neutral gloss). Note -- where the finish color is dark, mix White Surfacer half and half with the finish enamel for the prime coat.
b. One Coat Work -- apply one coat of either Flexico or Liquid-Lite (non-yellowing or neutral gloss).
Eggshell Enamel Finish
a. Two Coat Work -- prime the surface with DoubleUp Undercoat and finish with a coat of either Liquid-Lite (non-yellowing or neutral eggshell) or Satin Finish. Note -- for under dark colors mix un dercoat and finish color half-half for prime coat.
b. One Coat Work -- one coat of either Liquid-Lite (non-yellowing or neutral eggshell) or Satin Finish.
Stain and Varnish Finishes -- where the surface is in good condition as far as color is concerned and there is no evidence of alligatoring, cracking or spotting, simply wash the surface to remove all traces of dirt, wax, oil or grease and then sandpaper lightly. Remove sanding dust with duster or, preferably, with a tack rag. If the old varnished surfaces appear very hard and glossy, wipe with a rag saturated with Tack-it, just before refinishing. Where the old surface is alligatoring, cracking or dis coloring in spots, satisfactory refinishing requires remov al of the old finish with Quick-Cut or Master Paint & Varnish Remover. Then sand the bare surfaces smooth and refinish according to directions for New Wood on page 28.
For the refinishing of surfaces in good condition, apply one or two coats of any of. the following varnishes -- the kind being dependent upon the type of lustre desired. (Gloss) -- Master Quick Spar, "910" Varnish or Master Seat Finishing & Rubbing. (Satin, rubbed effect) -- Pyramid 4-Hour Satin Finish or Pen-chrome Clear Fin ish.
PLASTER. HARD WALLBOARD, CANVAS, METAL
Preparation -- for a perfect result, the walls should be washed clean with a good washing powder and then rinsed off with clear water. All cracks should be patched with a spackle or a patching plaster, and when dry, spot primed with a coat of shellac or "701" Clear Sealer. If the wall surfaces had been calcimined or starched, the washing recommended above should be done with warm water to insure complete removal.
Washable Rat Wall Finish (pastel tints) -- two coats are recommended. A prime coat of Liquid Velvet Wall Primer & Sealer tinted to approximate final color and a finish coat of Liquid Velvet. Two coats of Sateen may be used as alternate specification.
Washable Flat Wail Finish (deep colors) -- two coats are necessary. A prime coat consisting of equal parts "701" Clear Sealer and Liquid Velvet of the finish color and a finish coat of Liquid Velvet. Two coats of Sateen may be used as alternate specification.
One Coat Hat, Semi-Gloss, Gloss Finishes -- if the surfaces have been washed clean; there is to be no drastic change in color and the surface is sealed, i.e., has a good film of paint on it -- one coat of Liquid Velvet, Sateen, Satin Finish, Lustre-Tone, Liquid-Lite or Flexico will normally produce a satisfactory one coat job. If the sur faces appear porous, a prime coat of Liquid Velvet Wall Primer & Sealer or Double-Up Undercoat should be used.
DRI-WALL SURFACES (Sheetrock, Wallboard, Etc.)
See specifications above for "Plaster, Hard Wallboard, Etc."
CONCRETE AND CEMENT WALLS
See specifications above for "Plaster, Hard Wallboard, Etc."
HEAVY. SOFT INSULATING OR ACOUSTICAL BOARD
Hat Finish -- one or two coats of Celluseal Flat White.
OVER WALLPAPER
Hat Finish -- one coat of Liquid Velvet will usually cover most wallpaper patterns. The real success of this type of paint job is dependent upon how tight the wall paper is fastened to the wall. If the paper is loose, the job will not be satisfactory. Liquid Velvet will not tend to loosen the paper if it has proper adherence. O'Brien's Sateen may also be used over wallpaper.
OVER WATER PAINTS (such as Kem-Tone, O'Lite, Etc.)
Hat Hnlsh -- if the same type of coating is to be used, one coat of Sateen will normally provide a satisfactory job. If a highly washable flat finish is desired -- two coats are recommended -- one coat of Liquid Velvet Wall Primer & Sealer and one coat of Liquid Velvet.
SUGGESTIONS FOR GETTING BETTER
RESULTS IN WALL FINISHING
Stir the paint thoroughly before use. Use a good brush.
It a primer is to be used, it should be tinted to ap proximate color of the nish coat.
When deep colors are used, two coats are absolutely necessary. The first coat must be a sealing coat con sisting of three parts "701" Clear Sealer and one part Liquid Velvet of the finish color.
Best results will be obtained with deep colors if the final coat is stippled or applied with a roller applica tor.
Don't attempt to do too large of a "stretch" at one time. A wet edge must be constantly maintained to prevent laps.
Flow the paint on --- and brush out with a criss-cross motion to insure uniform distribution.
Room should be ventilated to insure drying of paint. Don't apply paint when room temperature is below SO. Allow overnight drying between coats.
MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT
Preparation (natal) -- if in good condition, simply wash thoroughly with naphtha or turpentine to remove grease, oil and dirt. Sandpaper lightly and then apply a coat of Tack-it just before painting. If any rust is present, re move with sandpaper and coat with Bond-On Metal Primer.
Preparation (weed) -- wash thoroughly with naphtha or turpentine to remove dirt, grease and oil. Sand lightly and apply a coat of Tack-it just before painting.
Lastreas Eaamel Finish -- one or two coats of either Flexico, Mech-A-Namel, Quick Drying Enamel or Trim & Trellis Colors. If two coats are necessary, allow first to dry hard and then sand lightly before application of second coat.

SECTION VI
Factory Maintenance Recommendations
In factories and industrial plants where machinery, tools and equipment must be maintained in tip-top condition for efficient operation and long life -- it always costs more not to paint.
Many paint manufacturers make a practice of shipping out specially labeled paints for factory maintenance. O'Brien has not adopted this policy except for a few special prod ucts formulated to meet certain unusual finishing require ments. Regular stock O'Brien finishes like Liquid Velvet, Satin Finish, Liquid-Lite and Floor & Deck Enamel are the best products we can possibly make for the decoration and protection of factory buildings and equipment. Moreover, these stock O'Brien finishes are carried by dealers in all parts of the country and thus are readily available. AH stock O'Brien products have been used extensively in fac tory maintenance painting for many years and will provide maximum performance and satisfaction.
The finishing recommendations in this section are general. Specific products for painting old and new surfaces will be found on pages 3, 4, 5 and 6.
General Purposes of Factory Pointing -- are as follows:
1. To preserve and extend the life of valuable assets.
2. To provide a cheerful place to work.
3. To promote cleanliness -- because the cleanliness of the workmen and the place in which they work will be ultimately reflected in the products which they help to manufacture.
4. To improve efficiency by providing better light, less eye strain and the easier execution of manual tasks.
5. To insure safety by identifying danger points, fire fighting equipment and by regulating traffic.
Walls and Ceilings -- even with present day fluorescent lighting, the use of proper paint colors can greatly increase the available light in working spaces. The use of white, which shows dirt the most, is not necessary. Pale ivory or yellow will give nearly as much light reflection -- at the same time providing interest and cheer. See page 33 for light reflectance values of various O'Brien colors.
Dadoes and Columns -- painting these surfaces a medium or dark color can make a plant appear "cut-up" and can also cause serious loss of light reflection. Dadoes and columns should be painted up to four or five feet in a medium, serviceable color. Surfaces above should be paint ed in same light colors as walls and ceiling.
Floors -- light reflection plus the safety factor should be considered in painting floors. A medium color, like Port land Gray or York Gray is every bit as serviceable as dark er colors. Light reflection is preserved and safety is in creased because tools and other objects lying on the floor are much more visible against a light color.
Production Machinery -- a greatly improved technique for painting has been developed, particularly for machines at which an operator works. The body of the machine is painted a soft medium gray or green (Mech-A-Namel Gray or Flexico Enamel Aqua Green); the working area is painted a soft contrasting cream or beige (Lustre-Tone Ivory); danger points are painted a bright orange (Mech-A-Namel Orange). By utilizing this kind of color scheme, the ma chine is given considerable interest and attractiveness.
The operator's attention is automatically, without strain,
32
called to its most important area because of color contrast. The orange danger points improve safety.
Pipeline Identification -- one of the best ways to save time and confusion in plant maintenance is to properly identify all pipelines by the use of colors. A standard set of sug gested identification rclors is given below:
Hot water -- Mech-A-Namel Gray
Cold Water -- Flexico Enamel Colony Blue
Live Steam -- Floor & Deck Enamel Monterey Brown
Return Steam -- Mech-A-Namel Orange
Electric Conduit -- Mech-A-Namel Green
Sewer -- General Black Enamel
Fire Lines -- Mech-A-Namel Red
Air Lines -- Lustre-Tone White.
Traffic and Zona Marking -- large industrial plants main tain order and promote efficiency and eliminate confusion by properly marking all zones for the storage of materials so that the aisles for their transport and movements are constantly kept open. Traffic and Zone Marking Paints are available in white and orange. Mech-A-Namel in Red and Green is also used for this purpose.
Laboratories and Special Fume Problems -- normally, O'Brien's Fume Safe White Enamel is recommended for surfaces ex posed to strong fumes present in laboratories. It is recom mended however, that maintenance buyers write the O'Brien Corporation for recommendations on special problems -- giving complete information regarding the type of fumes present.
Moisture Laden Roams (such as in textile mills) -- they present very difficult finishing problems. Write O'Brien for recommendations, giving as complete information as pos sible.
Exterior Metal Surfaces -- for iron and steel, follow the specifications given on pages 27, 30. Exterior Aluminum is not corrodible to any great degree but most users have found it advisable to paint it. This may be accomplished in the same manner as any other metal, except that Red Lead Primer should not be used. Instead, it should be primed with Bond-On Metal Primer.
Exterior Stucco, Concrete, Old Brick -- painting according to directions on page 30 will often preserve these surfaces most effectively as well as enhance their appearance. For maximum economy, colors of the beige or oxide red type should be used.
Steel Tanks (exterior) -- for minimum evaporation loss, white paint should be used on exterior steel tanks. Light Gray and Aluminum paint is also very "suitable. The very best way to maintain outdoor steel tanks is to wirebrusn completely to remove all rust. Prirqe with Red Lead Primer and finish with the best quality paint.
WASHABILITY OF PAINTS
Washable paints can do more for long run economy in a painting program than any other single factor. In factories particularly, washing is much less an upset to production than repainting and Pre-Shrunk Finishes like Liquid Vel vet, Satin Finish or Liquid-Lite, which can be washed many times between paintings, give many extra years of service at no extra cost to their users.

The Use of Color in Decorating
The proper use of color in decorating is most important and it is a subject upon which man; books have been writ ten. Included herewith, are a few general ideas which are
the result of experience -- and which may be helpful and beneficial.
Color Moons Light -- not only in the quality of the light but in the quantity too. As a guide in selecting the proper colors on surfaces and in rooms where ample light is re quired, we list below the actual light reflectance values of standard O'Brien wall finish colors, Colors in other types of paints, such as house paint, can be judged by their com parison with similar wall finish colors.

Warm and Cool Colors -- warm colors suggest warmth be cause they resemble the sun and fire. Cool colors create a cool atmosphere because they suggest water and foliage. Warm colors appear to advance while cool colors seem to retreat.
Wav Colors Cream Peach Coral Pink Red Yellow
Cool Colors Blue Green Grays Neutral Colors -- neutral
greens, such as Light Green-
Harmony of Colors -- this is a broad and technical subject. Generally speaking, there are veiy few colors which will not go well together and all O'Brien wall finish colors are "Keyed" to harmonize with each other. The O'Brien Cor poration maintains a Color Clinic whose services are avail able to O'Brien users on home, industrial, school and com mercial building projects which require special help.
Grayed or Muted Colors -- these are straight, pure hues which have been softened by the addition of a small amount of black or any colors which complement, i.e., Light Green can be softened by the addition of a small amount of red violet. Grayed colors are very popular today because they look so well with modem furnishings, fabrics, floor cover ings, etc. And too, their use makes mistakes in color har mony less likely.
Color hi Home or Oflieo -- your own personal color prefer ences should be given full reign. Adequate light reflection and color harmony are of real importance but the key to satisfaction is to use colors which you yourself like to live with.
Color la Stores and Showrooms -- the most important fac tor, other than adequate light, is to use colors which will enhance the appearance of the merchandise being displayed. For instance, an automotive dealer painted his modem show room walls with Liquid Velvet Black. From the street, the passerby only noticed the beautiful cars, which stood out because of the dark, inconspicuous walls.
Color in Dining Rooms -- use only colors which are ap petizing and which create a pleasant atmosphere. Generally, some red should be incorporated into the decorating scheme as it has a stimulating effect on the appetite.
Color In Schools -- colors which afford good light and make for a pleasant surrounding should be used. For full information and suggested color schemes on school decorat ing, write O'Brien for copy of brochure, entitled -- School Interiors, Color Layouts for Modern Classrooms.
Color hi Hospitals -- adequate light reflection, lack of glare and pleasant surroundings must be considered in planning the color scheme. Important too is the necessity for interest and lack of monotony. Further information can be obtained by writing for O'Brien booklet entitled. The Proper Use of Color in Hospital Decoration.

SECTION VIII
Special Problems in Painting
Peeling and Blistering of Exterior Paints -- peeling and blister ing of paint is always due to water or moisture. Exhaustive tests prove that a good paint, applied to a sound surface under satisfactory drying conditions will give a very satis factory performance. The primary causes of peeling and the principle behind blistering is explained in the following article, reprinted from the October, 1949 issue of the American Paint and Oil Dealer.
Blisters
By M. F. TAGGART
"Did you ever see a blister on a piece of finished fur niture? No. Did you ever see blisters on a frame house, well-painted, with good paint? Yes. Hundreds of blis ters, hundreds of times!
You'll have a lot of headaches caused by blisters in paint if you are in the paint business. Good wallpaper will blister too, if conditions prevail which cause good paints to blister.
What are blisters? Let's consider a little lesson in high school physics. A soap bubble is a perfect blister. An inflated tire tube is a perfect blister. Bubble-gum is a perfect blister; so is a basketball, a football, a balloon, a dirigible. You, too, can name several other man-made deliberate blisters.
A blister is simply a sound film of some pliable mate rial surrounding some gas or fluid which is under pres sure. A blister in a paint film on the outside of a frame house is a pliable intact film without a hole in the film, holding some gas or liquid or both under pressure. Never anything else. Two things are required, a good elastic film and something to cause pressure.
Usually blisters contain at least some water -- dis tilled water originally before it became loaded with solubles taken out of the wood or the back of the paint. Remember, only a perfectly good auto tire tube can be inflated to hold up your car and just as surely only a good paint film will blister.
Our American way of life calls for lots of bathing, washing, boiling foods in water -- even cooling down the furnace with frequent filling of the water-pan to raise the relative humidity. Then, too, we insulate to maintain even temperatures. Many homes of today are miniature low pressure steam boilers in disguise. We fill our homes with water vapor, elevate the tem perature with respect to the outside wall, then the steam under pressure travels right through wallpaper, paint, plaster, wood paneling, or what have you, all the way to the underside of the cold paint film where the steam may blow up the good paint film as a gas or be condensed to water and pushed outward by more steam. Then the paint, being a sound membrane without a hole in it, is blown up, forming blisters here and there. In time the pressure may become so great as to rup ture the film, and, pop-goes-the-weasel, you have curl ing back from the hole, eventual peeling if it is severe -- and then the paint or painter gets blamed.
It was no fault of the painter and the blister itself is proof that the paint was good up to the birth of the blister. All of this has been given wide publicity by Illinois University at Campaign, the Forest Product* Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin, and Purdue Univer sity at Lafayette, Indiana, and still the public blames the paint or painter.
Now for the cure. The cure should be self-evident to you by now. Reason it out. You never find a blister on an unoccupied building such as a garage or a poorly constructed old house where the cracks and open crev ices are wide enough to throw-out the moisture. No sir. Blisters occur only in tight construction, in a sound paint film caused by pressure from within the house behind the paint
The cure is simple: Just reduce unnecessary steam generation and open the pop-off valve on the boiler by venting the house. Notice, I said venting, not ventilat ing. Not a draft or current of air . . . just a healthy hole about the size of a small window. We call such vents louvres. Usually we install these vents in the attic, or under cornices, but remember that the pop-off valve effect must be thoroughly carried out, including boring holes in the head plate over the wall studding in each vertical area. Many a chronic peeler has been just an old blister job over-aged after blistering.
Keep this blister story in mind. It will stand you in good stead in later days and probably save your reputa tion as well as get your repeat business. That's where you make your real success, on repeat business."
Suggested Cares for Peeling and Blistering -- the house should be examined as carefully as possible and any contributing factors corrected or eliminated.
1. Repair loose or improper flashing.
2. Seal loose joints which allow water to get behind wood.
3. Correct structural work where wood siding is close to ground, permitting water and moisture to work it self up into wood.
4. In new home construction, use an impervious vapor seal sheating against outside edge of lath, behind plaster.
5. Appliances, such as hot water heaters, humidifiers, gas stoves, etc., should be checked so that their outlet of moist air has an outlet from the home.
6. When painting new plaster, apply a prime coat of "701" Clear Sealer, which serves as a vapor seal, preventing vapors from passing through plaster to air space be tween walls.
7. Vent the home as outlined above in Mr. Taggart's ar ticle. Additional venting can be accomplished by bor ing small holes through under edge of siding or by forcing small aluminum "shims" under the bottom edge of the siding so that any vapors between the sealed walls can escape. Additional information on these procedures can be obtained by writing O'Brien.
Alllgatoring -- this type of paint failure is due to the ap plication of hard finish coats over a soft primer. It is also caused by applying the finish coat before the primer has thoroughly hardened. To eliminate this condition, always
34 49 TOC 002187

SECTION VIII
allow the primer to dry hard -- and use a hard drying primer under hard drying finish coats.
Wrinkling -- this type of failure occurs because the paint film is applied too thick. The surface part of the film dries quickly while the underneath portion does not -- causing a contraction which results in wrinkling of the paint film. To remedy this problem, thin "heavy" paint to the proper consistency before using and brush the material out well.
Checking and Cracking -- the result of a breakdown in the paint film. The paint nc longer retains the ability to con tract and expand with changing weather conditions. Check ing and cracking can be kept to an absolute minimum by using a top quality outside paint and by avoiding heavy, thick coatings.
Metal Stains -- screens, hardware and other metal surfaces which are subject to corrosion, which then stains the wood surfaces around them, should be painted or varnished to eliminate this condition.
Painting over Copper -- although copper requires no paint to prevent it from deteriorating, it is often necessary to paint it in order to avoid streaking of light colored paints near or below it. Copper should be allowed to weather several months before painting. At that time, remove all grease and dirt but not the greenish oxide film. For a col ored finish use either "75" or T.T.O. House Paint or Trim and Trellis Colors. Where a clear finish is desired over the copper, use Marine Spar Varnish or Exterior Wood Finish, Clear.
Painting Aluminum -- to maintain proper appearance and to prevent corrosion in areas where aluminum is exposed to salt air, aluminum surfaces should be painted. Two coats of "75" Fume Proof White House Paint (lead free) are recommended.
Painting Surfaces Which Are Constantly Wet -- this is an ex tremely difficult and hazardous operation. Before doing any painting, jobs should be discussed with an expert for proper advise.
Finishing Cement, Concrete Floors Which Lie on Ground -- it is easy to determine whether the floors are constantly damp and wet by merely placing a blotter on the floor under a weight. After a period of time examine the blotter. If it is wet, painting the floor with a hard drying floor finish is not recommended inasmuch as the presence of water will destroy adhesion of the paint film before it is dry. If the above blotter test is negative, the following pre cautions will usually insure a very satisfactory finish.
1. Remove all traces of dirt, grease, oil or wax from the surfaces by washing with a good solution of water and washing powder. Rinse with clear water and allow surface to thoroughly dry.
2. If the floor is new- and very hard and smooth, etch it with a solution consisting of one part muriatic acid to three parts water. Mix solution in a wood or enameled pail and apply with a stiff brush or broom. When bub bling stops, rinse off with clear water and allow the surface to dry. (Note -- this same procedure can be Used on old painted floors where peeling has occurred due to lack of adhesion.)
3. Apply two or three thin coats of Floor and Deck Enamel, allowing sufficient drying between coats.
4. A coat of heavy duty paste wax applied to the surface and then buffed will afford protection to the painted surface and increase its life.
Painting Busted Surfaces -- many recommendations have been written on the prevention and cure of rusting but no com pletely satisfactory system is available. We list below, how ever, a few suggestions which will usually insure a satis factory job over surfaces which have rusted or where rust ing is a hazard.
1. All rust and scale must be removed from the surface. This can be done most quickly and completely with a power driven wire brush. Coarse sandpaper or steel wool can be used if power driven equipment isn't avail able.
2. The surface must be dry when it is painted.
3. For the initial coat, a rust inhibitive primer must be used. Products recommended, by choice are: Red Lead Primer, Zinc Chromate Primer and Bond-On Metal Primer. Apply a full bodied coat of any above listed primers and allow a week of drying, if possible, be fore application of succeeding coats. Vote -- do not count any of above primers as a finish coat, i.e., don't let a primed but unfinished surface be exposed for any long period of time.
Mildew Problems -- the surface should be examined with extreme care to be certain that the existing problem is mildew. In many instances, unusual cases of weathering and spotting has been called mildew. Where mildew is present, the following procedures should be followed.
1. The surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned with a strong washing powder solution, such as trisodium phosphate, and all traces of mildew removed. The sur faces should then be rinsed with clear water.
2. The surface must be completely dry when it is painted and should not be coated on highly humid or damp days.
3. Painting of cleaned surfaces must follow as quickly as possible -- before the surface can become re-infected.
4. Most paint dealers can supply toxic liquids, which when added to paints will greatly reduce the hazard of mildew. These liquids have considerable value but af ter a period of one or two years their toxic quality will become greatly reduced.
5. Surfaces should be painted with a fast drying paint so that it cannot become re-infected while still wet or tacky. O'Brien's T.T.O. Paint Super White has been specially formulated for use in tropical climates and will dry hard under normally unfavorable drying con ditions. It will give a most satisfactory performance on surfaces which have mildewed or where mildeW is a hazard.
Painting in Tropical Climates -- the major problem in painting exterior surfaces in tropical climates is to obtain a product which will dry hard under adverse conditions, i.e., high humidity. T.T.O. Super White, "75" Exterior Eggshell Paint and Stucco and Concrete Paint have all been formulated to meet this unusual requirement and all will give good service when properly applied to a clean, dry surface.

Ten Rules For Successful Painting
1. Read directions on the package for use of each product and follow them carefully -- especially as re gards thinning.
4. If paint trouble has previously occurred on the surface to be finished or if you are uncertain to any degree, get competent advice before going ahead.
8. Paint under favorable weather conditions. If outdoors, don't paint when the temperature is below 50 degrees or when the weather is damp, if indoors, keep the temperature be tween SO and 65 degrees and allow plenty of ventilation.
2. Use good tools, particularly good brushes. Select the right sixe brush to do the fob best.
5. Be sure the surface is dean of grease, wax, loose dirt, rust, soap de posits and thoroughly dry before painting.
6. Don't gamble on getting by eas ily. If you are at all uncertain about being able to do a successful one coat fob, start the right way by priming and executing a two coat job.
9. Allow the paint to dry hard be fore using the surface or before ap plying a second coat.
3. Stir the paint thoroughly both before and during application.
36
7. Get enough paint to do the fob and mix it all at one time. Don t take a chance on running short.
10. Spread or roll the paint on carefully -- take special care to dis tribute it evenly and do not attempt to paint too large an area at one time. On vertical surfaces don't stretch the paint; apply a full bodied coat. On floors apply thin, wellbrushed coats.

How to Estimate Paint Requirements
PAINTS
A. How to measure the square foot area of various surfaces.
EXTERIOR OF A HOUSE
1. Obtain the area of the body of the house by adding together the entire distance around and multiply the total by its height. In the illustration at the left this 50 x 25 house has a total distance around of 150 which multiplied by its height of 10 feet give a total square foot area of 1500 square feet.
2. Obtain the area of gable ends. In this case we have a half pitch roof which means that its height will be half its width. Its width is 25 so its height is 12^4. To obtain the area of the triangle, multiply the width by half the height, i.e., 25 x 7 (6.25 to be exact). Thus, the area of each gable end is 175 or the total area of both 350 square feet.
The height of a third pitch gable is one-third its width.
The height of a quarter pitch gable is one-fourth its width.
With both third and quarter pitch gables, multiply one-half the height by the width to obtain the area.
In measuring the total for the body of the house, make no allowance for windows or doors.
3. Trim of a house. Where this is painted separately, use a "rule of thumb" figure of 35 sq. ft. for each door and each window and compute the total by multiplying the number of doors and windows by 35.
4. Roof of a house. Figure the area as though it were a flat surface (in the above case 25 x 50 equals 1250 sq. ft.). Then, add 50% if the roof is half pitch; 3354% if one-third pitch and 25% if quarter pitch.

INTERIOR WALLS AND CEILINGS
Multiply the sum total of the entire distance around a room by its height. Add to this the ceiling area which is obtained by multiplying the rooms length by its width. In the illustration to the left, the sum total of the distance around this 12 x 15 room is 54. Multiplying by its ceiling height of 8 ft. equals a total of 432 sq. ft. The ceiling is 12 x 15 or 180 sq. ft. and the total area of the room, therefore, is 612 sq. ft.
Make no allowance for windows, doors or openings unless they total over 100 sq. ft.
INTERIOR FLOORS
Multiply the length by the width.
INTERIOR TRIM
Use the "rule of thumb" estimate of 35 sq. ft. for normal windows, and doors one side.
SPECIAL PROBLEMS
Kitchen Table and Four Chairs -- approximately 1 quart. Balustrades -- measure the front area and multiply by 4. Lattice work -- measure the front area and multiply by 4. Cornices -- measure the front area and multiply by 2.
Gutters and Downspouts -- measure front area and mul tiply by 2.
Wood Paneling -- allow one and one-half times actual area.
Wood Kitchen Cabinets -- measure front area and multiply by 5.
Radiators -- measure front area and multiply by 7.

O'Brien a Pacemaker in
Technical Development
Probably no other single paint laboratory has contributed so many outstanding techni cal developments to the industry as the O'Brien "lab". Equipped with the latest and most'modem scientific equipment, it serves as the "workshop" of the country's foremost paint chemists and engineers. Its noteworthy achievements include the pioneering of the use of synthetic resins and titanium pigments and the developing of a patented tempering process, call Thermolyzing, for the strength ening of the hardness and wear resistance of Tung and other drying oils. Within its walls is carried on the never ending program of re search and new product development -- the key to O'Brien's leadership, to the super ex cellence of O'Brien finishes.

Fine Grinding is an O'Brien Speciality
A formula "must" for the making of O'Brien Paints and Enamels is precision grind ing. Utilizing the most modern type paste mixers and grinding equipment yet de
vised, the dozens of five-roller, ball and pebble mills grind out thousands of gallons of paints, enamels, undercoats and other protective coatings. These finishes are so finely ground during this process that every minuscule particule is assimilated -- a contrib-
i uting factor to the smoother brushing, easier washing and better looking qualities of
O'Brien finishes. When finer paints are made, O'Brien will make them.

Varnishes and Synthetic Resins
The art of fine varnish making has been an O'Brien tradition since 1875 when the discovery and introduction of O'Brien's Electric Priming created such a sensation among carriage and wagon manufacturers. Today in large, modern varnish plants O'Brien manufactures hundreds of different clear coatings to meet the varied needs and requirements of its architectural and industrial users. Additional thousands of gallons of these matchless varnishes and synthetic resin compounds are required to provide the binder which makes O'Brien Paints and Enamels so extraordinarily durable and so washable. Product "milestones"' in this field of endeavor include such famous O'Brien Varnishes as Pyramid, Celluseal, "910", Alco-Safe, Pen-chrome and Master
2500 gallon thinning tank, mounted on scales, insures accurate reduction of materials.
Open kettles are used for cooking certain special varnishes and small batch orders.
Large kettles of this type turn out 2000 gallons of top-quality varnish at one time.
Adequate equipment plus experienced operators produce batch-to-batch color uniformity
It makes no difference when or where a can of O'Brien Paint is purchased, the customer is always assured that it will match
earlier batches of the same color and future batches yet to come. O'Brien master tinters are experts at their job. They supervise the addition of the tints during the final reducing process, which is accomplished in large 500 and 100 gallon tanks -- each equipped with a four blade turbo propeller to insure uniformity of color and consistency^ With O'Brien color match ing isn't a "hit or miss" proposition. It's another quality factor which the customer has come to expect in every O'Brien package.
42 49 TOC 002195
Color Styling
O'Brien was one of the first in the industry to recognize the importance of color in the selling of paint. Keyed colors, deep flat colors, the Decorator's Manual, a free color clinic service are just a few contributions which have made O'Brien a leader. O'Brien up-to-the-minute colors assure easy color selection -- real satisfaction.
Final Inspection
After O'Brien finishes have completed the complex process of manufacture, samples of each batch are sent to the inspection department. Here they are checked with the aid of precise mechanisms to be certain each meets rigid product specifications. Approval must be obtained before the material is filled out into cans and labeled.
Skilled technicians give final check to every batch of material. Samples of each are retained. Uniformity of sheen in semi-gloss enamels is determined and maintained with aid of glossmeter.
