THE SOCIETY OF THE PLASTICS INDUSTRY, INC. 1275 K ST., N. W. WASHINGTON D.C 2000S (202)371*5200 FAX (202)371-1022 SAFETY AWARDS 320 Plants Spotlighted for Safety Achievements The Society of the Plastics Industry's (SPI) Occupational Health and Environmental Issues Committee has recognized 320 plants with Safety Awards in its 1992 Occupational Safety and Health Survey. SPI conducts the Occupational Safety and Health Survey to collect statistical information of occupation illnesses and injuries in the plastics industry and to recognize those plants which have excellent safety records, according to Susan R. Howe, SPI's Assistant Technical Director, Technical Affairs. Seven hundred eighty five plants participated in the program. This year 137 Distinguished Safety Awards, 91 Achievement Awards and 92 Merit Safety Awards were presented. Distinguished Safety Awards recognize member company plants with no injuries or illnesses, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) during the Calendar year 1992. Achievement Safety Awards are presented to plants with no OSHA recordable injuries or illnesses involving lost workdays during the calendar year 1992. Merit Safety Awards are made to plants having an 1992 OSHA lost workday case incidence rate lower than the national average for the industry in 1991 and a reduction in lost workday rate of at least 20 percent when compared to their 1991 rate. In the latest Occupational Safety and Health Survey, 785 plant locations reported. The responses represented 214,712,264 employee hours for 103,023 employees. The lost workday case incidence (LWDI) rate for the 785 responding plants was 3.94 lost workday cases per 200,000 employee hours worked. The severity rate, a rate of the seriousness of the injuries and illnesses, for 785 responding plant was 78.9 lost workdays per 200,000 hours worked.
