Attached are results of noise surveys, shown in decibels (dBA), taken in November and December on Marine Docks No. 1 and No. 2.
There is a potential for excessive noise exposure when diesel engines are running on barges being unloaded. Normally, exposure is reasonable due to minimal time spent in this area and exposure would be due to starting and stopping engine or walking by and only when unloading,
Vihen unloading a barge and it is necessary to work in close proximity to a running diesel engine, wearing of hearing protection is recommended.
There is another potential for excessive noise exposure on Dock #2 on south work platform when the new fan blower is running and barges are being vented. h"hen it is necessary to work in this area with fan run ning, wearing of hearing protection is recommended.
Defective steam traps at Dock //I will be repaired by Marine personnel. Other areas present no problem at this time.
It is the responsibility of supervision to enforce the wearing of proper hearing protection by all personnel in the work area during noisy oper ations .
