to Germ any in 1958 to help Ambros obtain a visa to visit th e United States, saying he adm ired Ambros "not only for his ability but--more im portant--for his character, in term s o f truthfulness and integri ty ."
In an interview . Lantos, who aid

pointed G race, knowing his ties to this convicted crim inal."
In New York. M eir Jolovitx, na

Supporters point to Grace's to m history of philanthropy involving civic and church organizations arts

But Lantos says he is "not im pressed." N either are the peope who in recent days have w ritten angry letters to President Reagar w ith copies to Lantos.
A sampling: --A Pensacola. Fla., attorney called Grace's appointm ent to tnt task force "dem eaning and degrad ing to our governm ent."
--A Clevelander called the ap pointm ent "an abomination and ar affront" to Jew ish people.
--From Los Angeles a man w rote: "If there is any single issue th a t could turn moral people off your Administration, it sure is . . .
the appointm ent of J. P eter Grace. The last w riter said, as did some
others, th at he is a conservative R e publican who supported Reagan during his campaign for the pres idency.
The implicit th reat in the drive against G race's appointment is, of course, a defection of Jewish sup port for Reagan, which was sub stantial in 1980.
