FOREW ORD
For h u m rear* A cts has been n e d for * compact source o f basic infermstioa on accident prevention in iedualry. The body of safety engi neering knowledge hma etpanded trem tad stn ly since the first concerted efforts wens node a>t the b t g h a i n f of the century to reduce ndustriol losses. The National Safety Cottocit and m any other agencies have io the interim published the rem it of th eir experience and research in m any forms.
Until the publication of this book there has not been, however, one ' volume which has presumed to aerve as a ready reference which would put
the safety director immediately oa the trail of the answer to all but the most atteusea! of h is safety problems.
The Safe Practice Pam phlets and Data Sheets, long established as
technical publications of the National Safety Council, give more extensive
discussion to ecidcat prevention problems than does the MA.NUA.l~ They
are valuable complements to die MANUAL, b u t in no sense are they super
seded by iC
-
Obviously no volume could cneorapani the details of accident preven tion engineering for every industrial operation, nor even for the operations comaiiHi to most industries. Industrial safety in pocific application mean
close analysis of the operation in question, the design and eontrot of equip m ent aud ennixm m eal os as to reduce the h a tsn l, e nd the training of the employee toward safe attitudes and practices. The variable of safety in action are infinite. They can be discussed and illustrated in a single volume
only io terms of certain common characteristics:
The MANUAL is not a textbook covering die general' field of accident prevention theory, nor does it attempt to include the special problem f specialised m d o ttru t. Neither does it attempt to dtscuaa ways and m eant by which the employer can properly deal with the frjoli hatarde of his employees or participate in the public safety problems of his coniuumity. The engineering problems of iiuoy special industries, and highway, home and farm safely programs are m ore appropriately a part of other Council
publications.
The MANUAL is a comprehensive sourer, of the "How" of safely, in leaded lu lie k ept at hand for frequent siiil ready reference by the safety director, dte safely engineer and the foreman. It sets forth the principles of safely foe activities In which the great m ajority of caMtufacturing indt*-
triaiieu engage. It carries these principles into *t much detail 6 it t i n
The MANUAL is a comprehensive source of the "how" of safety, in*
