Ethanolamines/Glycol Ethers Tier 3 Procedure Section Number: Issue Number: Original Date: Revision Date: Title: References: 620 2.3 12-17-91 Author: David Avera/Mike Viator 11-9-97 Specific Gravity Using A Pycnometer Glossary Of Equipment Identification (Text #114), U.S. Pharmacopia National Formulary 1990 Edition (Uspxxii) (Nfxvii) L-9035 620. Specific Gravity Using A Pycnometer 1.0 Definition of pycnometer: 1.1 A glass vessel used for measuring density. 2.0 Safety Notations: 2.1 Safety glasses are required in the lab at all times. 3.0 Pycnometer value: 3.1 The pycnometer value as of 09-12-95 is for: 960716A 26.962 960717B 26.715 3.2 Whenever a new pycnometer is put in place, this procedure will be changed to reflect the correct value and lot number. 3.3 Whenever a new pycnometer value is generated the value label on the sartorious balance must be changed also. 4.0 Procedure: 4.1 Place a clean, dry pycnometer on the analytical balance (current lot number). 4.2 Tare the scale by pressing the red bar on the bottom of the display panel. 4.3 Remove the pycnometer. Remove the top and pour in the sample to be measured. 4.4 Pour sample even with the top of the vessel. Be sure there are no air bubbles. 4.5 Gently place the top onto the vessel. Notice there is a hole through the top. Excess sample will spill out the top. Date Printed: April 18, 1998 Paper Copies Of This Document Are Uncontrolled & Not Subject To Update.
