The Red Top Shows the20% More Bulb Gained by Tube Milling
USG PLASTERS HAVE BEEN TUBE MILLED FOR THIRTEEN YEARS
AND FOR
YEARS PLASTERERS AND DEALERS HATE
HAD THE BENEFIT OF THIS IMPROVEMENT PIONEERED BY DSC
# Dealer?. Plasterers and PlasteringContractors have not had to wait 13 years for USG to bring its plaster up to standard.
For that many years plasterers have used plaster from the USG Red Top Bag and have rated Red Top the standard for judging all others. And dealers have sold Red Top Plaster in overwhelming preference to all others.
TO'?
There is no mystery to the answer. Red Top Plaster has been better, not for one reason but for many. It has had greater plasticity. It has been uniform. It has been dependable in season and out
But one reason --and only one-for Red Top Rock Plaster superiority over the last thirteen years is that it has been tube-milled. Tons of steel balls have ground the plaster par ticles to a fineness that made the plaster bulk a fifth greater than old fashioned plaster. Not today. Not just yesterday.
Tube-milling explains the Red Top bag. Thirteen years ago when the tube-milling process was introduced. USG had millions of jute bags in stock. These bags represented an investment of more than a million dollars. They were too small for the tube-milled plaster.
So a red strip was sewed on the top of each bag. The red strip formed the Red Top and showed that the new USG Plaster bulked a fifth more than the old plaster. And now Red Top, going into its fourteenth year, is the most significant name in the plaster industry. Improvements in USG Plaster did not stop thirteen years ago. New improvements introduced have not been announced with a blare of trumpets or a catalog of claims. Quality has been put in the plaster for the benefit of those using and selling the plaster. But now come the greatest improvements in the history of the plastering art. A piaster patented by USG, of a'quality so high and a job performance so sure that it can be backed by an unqualified guarantee. On the next pages is the story of the improvements in Red Top ^all Plaster-improve ments that make possible an unqualified guarantee.

IMPROVEMENTS IN
RED TOP
CONSTITUTE THE GREATEST FORWARD STRIDE
EVER MADE IN THE MANUFACTURING OF PLASTER
0 Ever read a list of the precautions to be taken with plaster? Here are a few:
"Use only clean water. Use only dean, sharp. well-graded sand, free from dirt, quicksand and frost. Screen openings. Keep plastered walls from drying out. etc., etc., etc.
Plaster has been rated a temperamental material. To some extent it has been. ater of crystallization is driven out of gypsum to make plaster. To regain its original rock character on a wall, plaster lias to take up water and so recombine with it that the water of crystallization is put back. A chemical change. And a tricky one.
For years plaster has been improved. USG had led all others in making improvements. And always in studying plaster per formance. L SG chemists and engineers have set as their goal an abuse-proof plaster. One harder to misuse than to use right.
Such a plaster is introduced to you now-an improved Red Top
Plaster. Furnished from USG Rock Plaster Mills. Guaranteed by U 5 G. Exclusive with U S G. Completely covered by l .S. patents.
Actually, this improved Red Top Plaster has been in trial use for two years. Thousands of tons of it have been used in a dozen or more parts >{ the United States. IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED
# Ask any experienced plasterer what the ideal plaster would he if he could create one to his own specification. One of the first things he would demand would he uniform set-not uniform set under similar conditions hut under different conditions. He would say:
1 --"l want a plaster that l can sand one to one. one part of sand to one part of plaster, for scratch coat over ntelal lath and then sand three to one for brown coat over the same lath without change in setting time.
2 - "I want a plaster that 1 can use over different bases in the same build* ing, wood lath, metal lath, brick, etc., and get the same setting time. I want a plaster that I can use with different amounts of sand las required hv standard specifications! and get the same setting time.
3-"I want a plaster that I can mix with a hoe two sacks at a time or that l can throw into a machine mixer without special retardation, that [ can mix in large hatches and not be bothered with quick set.
I--"l want a plaster that will not dry out if von give it half a chance to set-one that will set in from two to six hours on a hot. dry day. instead of holding for ten or twelve.
5-"I want a plaster that stays plastic. even after months of storage, a plaster that raves the mechanic's arm.
6-"I warn a plaster that produces better finished work because it gives the plasterer an opportunity to do better work.
7- *'t want a plaster that sets from the lath out. that gives me time to straighten. liarhv and fioat it.
ft-"I want a planter that sets even, not spottv. that holds long enough to let me go over it thoroughly, and then once it starts to set. sets in a hurry.
9- "I want a plaster that is as near trouble*proof as possible, the same with this sand as the next, the same in this town and the next, the same today and tomorrow.
10- **I want a plaster that raises the standard of plastering work because I know that plaster properly used has been and still is the best interior finish made."
Who in the whole building field, front the architect to the home owner, would not endorse this plasterer's specification! It is a difficult specification hut it i a sound specification. It is a specification not made hy a theoretical plasterer hut hy mechanics all over the United States, men of long experience who know plaster from the mixing lox to the finished wall.
Todav we ijv confidently that this specification, difficult us it is. has been met hv improvements in Red Top Plaster.

HOW RED TOP NOW MEETS PLASTERER S SPECIFICATION
0 Red Top Plaster as it is now being shipped in the Red Top Bag eliminates the greatest cause of plaster complaints, \ariation in setting time-slow set and quick set-caused hv dirty sand, dirty water, different amounts of sand and varying job conditions caused by local plastering practices.
Just imagine a plaster that can be sanded one to one for scratch coat over metal lath and then in the next batcli be sanded three to one for the brown coat without a change in the setting time! With old type plasters the difference would he hours, with Red Top the difference, if any, now is only minutes.
Imagine a plaster that can be used with varying quantities of sand as required in standard specifications for scratch coat over different bases, metal lath, Rocklath. insulating lath, wood lath, brick, gypsum tile, and clay tile without any appreciable change in setting time!
Almost any job of any size lias more than one kind of plaster base in it. In addition to the Rocklath. wood lath or other type of lath used generally in the building, there will probably he some metal lath, and in the average house job some plastering over a brick chimney. With Red Top Plaster all of the differences in setting time caused by application over these different bases are now eliminated. The plaster sets the same over every type of base.
1 - It sets the same with little or much sand. 2 -- It sets the same with clean sand as dirty sand, the same with fine sand as coarse sand.
3 --It sets the same with clean water and dirty water.
4-It sets from the lath out. instead of from the surface in. as old plasters set. This gives the mechanic more time to straighten, darby, trowel, and float the surface. 5-It sets uniformly, and. once it has started, sets quickly. It does not set up spotted and uneven. 6-It even helps hold against the accelerating action caused by dirty tools and set-up gypsum in the mixing water and mixing box.
7 -- It eliminates dry outs-white, chalky, soft spots that appear in new plaster jobs exposed to hot- dry weather.
8 -- It eliminates differences in setting time caused by hot and cold weather. 9-Ft retains its plasticity and working qualities in the standard USG bag. 10 -- It is the nearest approach to a trouble-proof plaster.

Where should the keeping qualities of plaster be put-in the paper package that carries the piaster or in the plaster itself? USG believes keeping qualities best serve the dealer, the contractor and the owner when in the plaster.
If plaster had been perfect, if no improvements were possible, then some changed package might provide a novelty in connection with the sale of plasfer. But USG believes in product improvement, in spending money to make a better plaster, rather than in making the statement that its plaster is different because It is in a different bag.
Bags, remember, don't go on a wall or ceiling. Plaster does. And Red Top Plaster now is guaranteed to keep its working qualities and plasticity for at least a year.

0 Red Top Plaster improvements are not an experiment. Tliev have been thoroughly tested over a period of more than two years of trial field use. Improved Red Top Plaster has been shipped from different mills into manv markets with all kinds of sand and water conditions, ft lias purposely been tried out where coinplaint conditions have been most common anil vs here the need* for an improved material have been greatest.
Thousands of tons of the new Red Top Plaster have alreadv been shipped and used under all kinds of job conditions. Com plete records have been kept on all of tlii> plaster to check hv actual job experience what the new Red Top vs ill do.
ft lias been cheeked in markets where it goes on small jobs, is mixed with a hoe a couple of sacks at a time and used in a few minute*. It has been checked in summer and winter, on dry days and wet. It has been checked on large jobs where it is mixed in loathin'- mixers <<f various sizes, where it is agitated much more than in a mixing box (an accelerating effect), hoisted several floors, and required to hold much longer than on the small job.
Based on this experience the Lulled Slates Gypsum Company now offer* Red Top Plaster with the first unqualified guarantee ever given on a plastering material.
COMPARE THESE TWO LISTS OF PLASTER PRECAUTIONS ONE IS FOR OLD TYPE PLASTER. THE OTHER iS FOR RED TOP
