March 28, 2017 Administrator Scott Pruitt U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 1200 Pennsylvania Ave, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20460 Dear Administrator Pruitt: On behalf of the American Foundry Society (AFS), we would like to invite you to address our members at our metalcasting industry's Washington conference on Wednesday June 21, 2017 for a breakfast session at 7:45 a.m. in Washington, D.C. We are very eager to learn more about your efforts to reform the agency and make changes to regulations under the Trump Administration. We expect over 100 industry executives, including owners, plant managers and safety directors from across the nation, to be in attendance at this important event. Our event will be held at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Ave., N.W. Burdensome regulations harm the international competitiveness of energy-intensive, tradeexposed U.S. industries like metalcasting. Metalcasters work diligently to comply with costly and often needless regulations handed down from Washington. Too often, these rules are too complex and not technologically and/or economically feasible to comply with. The burden of environmental regulation falls disproportionately on manufacturers and heaviest on small manufacturers, because their compliance costs often are not affected by economies of scale. AFS is the leading trade and technical association for the North American metalcasting industry with over 7,000 members. Metal castings are the foundation for all other manufacturing. We are vital to national defense, infrastructure, and automotive/heavy-duty truck sectors, as well as the entire U.S. supply chain. Ninety percent of all manufactured goods incorporate engineered castings into their makeup. We produce castings which are made from iron, steel and/or aluminum. These critical components, have thousands of applications and are used in cars, trucks, airplanes, ships, defense, all types of machinery, air conditioners, street lights, refrigerators, lawn mowers, medical devices, oil and gas field equipment, water works, railroads, mining and agricultural equipment. There are nearly 2,000 foundries in the U.S. employing over 200,000 employees in every state in the nation. Over 80 percent of our members employ less than 100 people. Most are middle class manufacturing jobs that offer Americans the chance to make a good living for their families. 17cv1906 Sierra Club v.
