America's natural gas and oil industry supports 10.3 million nationwide jobs across a range of industries. It comes as no surprise that we could generate hundreds of thousands of additional jobs by opening some of the 94 percent of federally controlled offshore acreage that is currently off limits to responsible energy development. The new studies, conducted by Calash and Northern Economics, break down the specifics by region. Over a 20-year period after initial lease sales, the studies' projections show development in four offshore regions could support major economic activity and nationwide job growth, including: Eastern Gulf of Mexico Nearly 165,000 nationwide jobs supported Projected $118 billion total cumulative spending $14 billion spent per year by the oil and natural gas industry Atlantic Nearly 265,000 nationwide jobs supported $260 billion total cumulative spending $22 billion spent per year by the oil and natural gas industry Pacific Over 300,000 nationwide jobs supported Projected $160 billion total cumulative spending $25 billion spent per year by the oil and natural gas industry Alaska Up to 13,500 nationwide jobs per year Projected $53.4 billion total cumulative spending Nearly $2 billion spent on average per year by the oil and natural gas While the economic impacts could extend nationwide, coastal states, in particular, stand to benefit not only in terms of jobs but revenue growth. Due to production in the Gulf of Mexico, state budgets in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas could see $275 million through revenue sharing - funding that can support schools, roads, bridges and other state needs. Tourism and fishing industries are thriving in these states alongside energy operations, demonstrating that energy development can safely coexist with other industries, and with military activity. Offshore development is safer than ever, with more than 100 standards created or strengthened since 2010 and the Center for Offshore Safety established to facilitate the highest safety standards and continual safety advances. World energy demand is growing, and government projections indicate the U.S, economy will be fueled by natural gas and oil for decades to come. The world needs more energy and the United States - the global leader in environmental oversight and safety standards - is the best place to provide it. Sincerely, Jack N.
