Re: Vice media inquiry: bug repellents
Robert,
I included my questions in my previous emails, but I've pasted them below again. These are the specific questions I'd like to ask.
It seems to me that some of the people I've reach out to at the EPA are hesitant to put me in contact with someone. I wonder if this is because they think we're writing a negative article on repellents or the regulation surrounding them. That's simply not the case. We're just writing a piece for our Asking for a Friend column about bug repellents, why you should use them, what the best ingredients are, and if there are any that could cause adverse effects (like, unregulated ones or ones that haven't been approved by the EPA), etc. I would think someone at the EPA would be happy to talk about this since whoever is involved in the process would have a lot of knowledge. News peg? It's summer, and the bugs are out. Simple as that.
Let me know how we can move forward with an interview. Thanks!
Michelle
1. What's the process like for evaluating and approving skin-applied insect repellents? 2. Which ingredients in repellents have been tested by the EPA, but not approved? Why were they not approved? 3. What are some of the adverse reactions or side effects of using (certain) repellents frequently? 4. What health risks do unregistered repellents pose to people? 5. How can people choose a repellent that is safe and effective?

Hey Michelle,
Thanks for reaching out. Since we sent you a link last week, perhaps you could send some specific questions said link doesn't address? That way, we can direct your inquiry to appropriate staff in case we can't schedule and interview.
Also - and to make sure we get you the best and most relevant info - would you mind telling me more about your inquiry: News peg, any particular event, trend or debate that prompted your interest in this story?

Hi EPA team,
I'm checking in on this media request for Vice. Is anyone from the EPA available for an interview tomorrow or Wednesday after 1:30pm ET to talk about bug sprays?
Please let me know ASAP who is available and at what times so we can get something scheduled. Thanks in advance!
Best, Michelle

I will certainly see if an interview is possible. If it is not, can you please send over specific questions that the website does not address? And if you just need attribution, we can look into that too.

Hi Dave,
I'm a reporter with Vice. I'm writing an article about insect
repellents - how to use them safely, side effects of using
unregistered repellents, etc. I'd love to speak about this with an
expert at the EPA involved in regulating these repellents.
Below are some questions. Can you please help me get in contact
and/or schedule an interview with the right person at the EPA for
Monday or Tuesday? I can be available any time at/after 1:30pm
ET on both days.
Please let me know what works best - thank you so much!
