ORD has partnered with the Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) and its research arm, the Environmental Research Institute of the States (ERIS), over the past several years to share EPA research and to strengthen the alignment of EPA's science and technical capabilities with state research priorities and needs. As part of our outreach efforts, ORD has hosted state environmental agency leaders and staff to visit ORD labs to learn about EPA's research, meet our leadership and scientists, and see first-hand some of the innovative work being done by ORD researchers. Our goal is to make EPA research more accessible to states. It is also very helpful for us to hear more about the environmental issues states are confronting, and receive feedback on how ORD's research could more effectively support our joint efforts to protect human health and the environment. Sierra Club v. EPA 18cv3472 NDCA Tier 5 ED 002061 00172819-00001 This will be a one-day meeting focused on topics of interest to your states, followed by a lab tour. The research at ORD's Ada laboratory provides the scientific basis for tools, strategies and technologies to protect and restore ground and surface water quality and ecosystem functions. The Ada facility has several unique research capabilities, including laboratories, field equipment, and test wells to perform specialized subsurface investigations on groundwater contaminant transport, as well as develop and assess technologies for remediating groundwater contamination. Scott Thompson, ERIS Board member and Oklahoma DEQ Director, will be our state co-host for the meeting. Anne Idsal and David Gray from EPA Region 6 plan to join us. We plan to cover produced water from oil and gas production as an agenda topic, and also invite state oil and gas directors to join us for this meeting. We will also be reaching out to some tribal environmental leaders in Oklahoma to see if they might be able to join us, as well as a representative from the Ground Water Protection Council and the National Rural Water Association. As you prepare for your travels, we suggest staying at the Hampton Inn in Ada the night of August 13. We have set aside a block of 20 rooms at the per diem ($93/night + tax) rate for attendees. To reserve and pay for your room, please call the hotel (580-436-4040) and request one of "Lisa Matthews rooms" giving your name and providing the confirmation: i Ex. 6 1. For those able to make it, we are also planning a group dinner on August 13 at ~6:30 pm in Ada (details TBD). We held three similar meetings recently - Region 4 Southeastern and neighboring states' visit to EPA Research Triangle Park, NC in August 2017, Region 5 Midwest and neighboring states' visit to EPA Cincinnati in February 2018, and Region 1 New England states' visit to EPA ORD's Narragansett, Rl lab in June 2018. We've received positive feedback from the state commissioners and staff who participated in these meetings, stating that they have found the meetings to be very valuable, informative and time well spent, and have followed up to connect staff with some of EPA's scientists. We hope you will be able to join us for this visit, and please feel welcomed to bring a few staff with you. Please RSVP by July 9 to Lisa Matthews, ORD State Liaison (mafthewslisa@epa.gov or; Ex. 6 land Amy Scheuer (scheyer.arny@epa.gov). As we draft the agenda, it would be most helpful if you could please send us input on your state's most pressing environmental challenges and science needs, along with any otherfeedback on agenda topics of interest to Lisa Matthews by July 11. We look forward to the event, and please feel free to reach out to Lisa with any questions. Sincerely, Christopher (Chris) S.
