ASBESTOS SURVEY
This report cover* a survey of 8/15/72 of sen* of tb* asbestoehsnflUng operations at the Repauno Plant. In the insulation shop, asbestos is scored or cut in preparation for its use in the field. -Asbestos is handled only about three to four hours per month in the shop. There are approximately 13 man involved with insulating operations
of which 60-70jt of the Insulation handled contains asbestos.
With this report is a table shoving the results obtained in this survey. There does not appear to'be & problem coqplying with the time-
weighted average allowable concentration of 5 fibers per milliliter of air. This is based upon both the concentrations and the time involved
with handling asbestos products. However, the ceiling limit criteria of 10 fibers per milliliter Is either exceeded or is a borderline situation for number of operational procedures.
It is pexaiasable for the operators to wear respiratory protection
but engineering end other control measures should be contemplated far '
reducing the workers' exposure.
.
A nunber of items that require attention are as follows:
-
~ 1) Wetting asbestos pieces prior to removing doth cover and, if
needed, prior to scoring and autting;
> y v.-
a
2) By reducing the open area between the lower surface of the
.
band saw table and the exhaust opening, dust collection should
improve*
ry
3) Consider other means of inproving the dust collection at the source of release rather than relying upon the canopy hoods to clean the air;
-
4) In place of brushes and brooms, design attachments for the vacuum line for use in cleanlng-up area;

Comments
Scoring insulation blocks on table saw - dust was created but was directed downward - exhaust could not handle all of dust - air supply to room redistributed dust throughout room -
worker wore Lustfoe 66 approved respirator
Same as for Sasple #1
Cutting angles on band saw
Using brush and broom for cleanup - exhaust on for period of time but because of floor location of make-up air, the exhaust was shut off - this man also dumped bag with collected asbestos wastes
Same general comments as for Sasple 47 except this man rolled up bag on dust collector
