A follow-up survey for potential exposure to asbestos fibers during drilling operations was conducted by John P. Murphy, Senior Industrial Hygiene Assistant, HS&E - Industrial Hygiene Field Services Office, Shell Oil Company, New Orleans, during the period May 6-9, 1984. Personal exposure monitoring was conducted on Drillers and Rotarymen of Rig 25 on both shifts. This repeat survey was done as a follow-up to data reported by our letter dated December 21, 1983, to obtain additional information on potential exposures during tripping operations. However, the drill bit had been replaced earlier than expected, just prior to Mr. Murphy's arrival, and drilling continued through the entire sampling period with only one brief trip for precautionary measures. The results of asbestos exposures during this routine drilling period are reported on Table 1.
Personal monitoring was also conducted on Derrickmen for exposure to nuisance dust during the mixing of chemicals in the Pit area. These results are summarised on Table 2.
The asbestos exposure results are well below the current Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 2.0 fibers/cc, 8-hour Time-Weighted Average (TWA) established by OSHA. The results are also below the lower levels that are being considered in the proposed OSHA Standard.
The three personal samples collected for nuisance dust were all below the PEL of 15 mg/rrw established by OSHA. Additionally, the disposable respirators used by the employees further reduced the potential for exposure. These results are indicative of the potential for exposure to nuisance dust. It is suggested that the employees refer to the appropriate product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) supplied by the manufacturer to insure that each product is classified as a nuisance dust. Some products may have constituents with lower PEL'S and may require modifications in current handling procedures.
