A number of materials availa ble for this from many sources are usually petroleum-based oils of naphthenic or aromatic character. Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is a synthetic alkylaromatic suitable for use as a secondary plasti cizer with many advantages over petroleum-based oils. Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer couples low volatility with good low-temperature performance, like most synthetic alkylbenzenes. The availa bility of the product is insured and its consistency is not affected by the changing naphthenic and aromatic character of crude oil feedstocks, since Conoco DPA is synthetic and a detergent alkylate co-product. Efficiency and Compatibility The change in efficiency as Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer replaces phthalate ester plasticizer is seen in the tensile properties and hardness. This is inherent in the use of a secondary plasticizer as they are much less efficient as plasticizers than are esters. This can work to a compounder's advan tage. however, in that by using a secondary plasticizer he can increase the total amount of plasticizer in a formulation to achieve the desired softness. This effectively substitutes expensive resin with less expensive plasticizer and can allow higher filler loading. The compatibility of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is similar to that of many oils of comparable volatility and aromaticity. As with petroleum-based secondary plasticizers, volatility is increased by the use of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer, but the increase is less than that experienced with petroleum products of comparable compatibility. Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is also suitable for use in plastisol applications where it not only exhibits the properties already mentioned but can also function as a viscosity control agent. Low-Temperature Properties One very clear performance advantage for Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is in the area of lowtemperature flexibility as shown by the brittle point (ASTM D-746) and Clash-Berg tests (ASTM D-1043), For example, a 25 percent substitution with Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer has reduced the Clash-Berg low-temperature flex test result by 15 to 25C depending on the primary plasticizer used. Density Reduction Since the specific grav ity of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is less than that of primary plasticiz ers {0.899 compared to about 0.980). the mixed plasticizer would have a lower specific gravity. As a result, the finished compound would be of lower density. On a weight basis, the cost of the formula tion containing Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer would be less. This would represent a savings in addition to that obtained solely due to the lower cost of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer relative to primary plasticizers. Color With secondary plasticizers, there is some color darkening during exposure to a xenon arc lamp. The severity is less than with many highly aromatic oils, but appropriate testing for each end-use applica tion must be carried out to determine the effect. Important Color of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer may vary from shipment to ship ment and is subject to subsequent color degradation in storage. Color characteris tics of a given sample or shipment may be different at time of shipment, time of receipt inspection, or time of use. Conoco believes the variation in. and degradation of. the color of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer should not affect the plasticizer performance properties. Conoco makes no representation or warranty, including but not limited to a war ranty of merchantability or suitability for a.particular purpose, whether or not such purpose is known to Conoco, or as to the color of said product or products made therefrom. vw 000008347 (conoco) Conoco Chemicals The above data are based on tests and experience which Conoco Inc. believes reliable and are supplied for informational purposes only. A number of materials are available for this from many sources and are usually petroleum-based oils of naphthenic or aromatic character. Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is a synthetic alkytbenzene suitable for use as a secondary plasticizer having many advantages over petroleum-based oils. As is general in many applications where synthetic alkylbenzenes are compared with petroleum-derived oils, Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer couples low volatility with good low-temperature performance. Being synthetic and a coproduct of the detergent alkylate business, the availability of the product is insured and its consistency is not affected by the changing naphthenic and aromatic character of crude oil feedstocks. Typical properties of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer are shown in Table I. COMPATIBILITY The compatibility of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is similar to that of many oils of comparable volatility and aromaticity. The compatibility limits as shown by the Loop-Spew test are summarized in Table II. These results indicate the primary plasticizer replacement level could be up to 25 percent depending on the formulation. It also shows compatibility is greater with DOP than with DINP. Of course, each individual formulation and plasticizer level would have its own limits on the amount of secondary possible, and for each application, compatibility must be ^ determined. The effects on properties that can be expected on replacement of DOP or DINP with Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer are shown in Table III. EFFICIENCY The change in efficiency as Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer replaces phthalate plasticizer is seen in the tensile properties and hardness. This is inherent in the use of a secondary plasticizer as they are basically much less efficient as plasticizers than are esters. This can work to a compounder's advantage, however, in that by using a secondary plasticizer he can increase the total amount of plasticizer in a formulation to achieve the desired softness. This effectively substitutes expensive resin with less expensive plasticizer and can allow higher filler loading. The lower efficiency of secondary plasticizers is also evidenced by longer fusion and dry-time measurements. The different processing characteristics of blends utilizing Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer can easily be overcome by adjusting processing conditions. As with petroieum-based secondary plasticizers, volatility is increased by the use of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer, but the increase is less than that experienced with petroleum products of comparable compatibility. LOW TEMPERATURE PROPERTIES One very clear performance advantage for Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer is in the area of low-temperature flexibility as shown by the brittle point (ASTM D-746) and Clash-Berg tests (ASTM D-1043). The Clash-Berg low-temperature flex test, in particular, clearly illustrates the improvements that can be expected upon substitution of Conoco DPA secondary plasticizer for either DOP or DINP.
