Dear Leila,
Congress and the Trump administration are advancing tax reform proposals that, while not yet finalized, represent a bold step to modernize the nation's tax code to increase our economic growth and create American jobs.
The U.S. natural gas and oil industry strongly supports both priorities. We support 10.3 million jobs across all 50 states while adding $1.3 trillion to the national economy. All that economic activity generates major revenue for the federal government - about $70 million a day on average in income taxes, rents, royalty payments and fees.
The positive impact of natural gas and oil development extends throughout the economy, stimulating growth in other sectors and helping both businesses and families save on energy costs. Drivers saved over $550 at the pump in 2015, while lower costs for utility bills, products and other energy-related expenses boosted household budgets by $1337. Manufacturers -- including producers of steel, chemicals, plastics, fertilizers and numerous other products -- are saving on power and materials costs, supporting a manufacturing renaissance and providing a major advantage over foreign competitors.
The right tax policies can sustain and even accelerate the economic benefits generated through America's role as the world's leading producer and refiner of natural gas and oil.
The industry contributes approximately $232 billion in domestic capital investments every year, including worker salaries, equipment, structures and technologies that produce the energy that fuels our economy. Strong cost-recovery provisions that allow for a stable and predictable stream of cash flow are critical to the industry's ability to recover costs and reinvest to meet the economy's energy demands. A competitive international tax system is also important so we can reinvest even more in the U.S. economy while keeping costs low for energy consumers.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) stated, "Our legislation is focused entirely on growing our economy, bringing jobs back to our local communities, increasing paychecks for our workers, and making sure Americans are able to keep more of the money they earn." We support these objectives to make them a reality.
Pro-growth tax legislation will ensure that our industry remains a critical driver of economic growth, investing billions each year in the U.S. economy, and adding to the more than 10 million jobs we proudly support right here in the U.S.
Sincerely,
Jack N. Gerard President & CEO API
Natural Gas - At the Heart of Powering America Abundant, affordable natural gas has lowered energy costs for consumers while also playing the lead role in reducing U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide from power generation to their lowest point in nearly 30 years. On top of all that, natural gas-fueled generation has unique attributes that enhance the reliability and resiliency of the U.S. power system. Watch our new video illustrating the integral role of natural gas in America's 21st-century electric power system.
