SECRETARY ZINKE'S TOP 10.docx
Dear (b) (6) My guess is the interview will last 30-45 minutes.
Lori is the primary screener of potential political appointees. My impression is that only a small minority of people who want a job actually get to the face to face interview stage, so this is already a very good sign for you. Of course, I did tell her you walked on water.
Lori will be evaluating you for a role in PMB, either as chief of staff, or less grandiosely, as a political aide de camp to me and our future assistant secretary, Susan Combs. In that light, she'll be looking for a number of things:
evidence to suggest you supported in some fashion the Trump campaign, helpful but not essential, since very few of us on the political team here were Trump supporters during the primaries
evidence that you actively and publicly opposed Trump in the primaries or in the general election (a deal-killer)
skills relevant to the work of PMB, such as knowledge of federal HR, procurement, strategic planning, financial management, IT, budget, project management, ability to herd bureaucrats
interpersonal skills: professional appearance and demeanor, experience working in teams, ability to get along with a variety of people, comfort with both career civil servant SESers and political appointees, savoir faire
personality: energy, motivation, enthusiasm, willingness to learn, appropriate blend of confidence and humility, appropriate blend of assertiveness and respect for authority, ability to manage upward (could you interact effectively with a bureau director or assistant secretary, or more generally people significantly more your senior), or on the flip side, would she have any reason to be afraid to send you into a meeting with an assistant secretary, intelligence, persistence, creative problem-solving
general policy compatibility: political party affiliation, pro domestic energy (do NOT need to be a climate change denier), general tendency to support less intrusive federal government. I have attached Secretary Zinke's pretty widely discussed Top 10 priorities
The above may appear to be an intimidating list, but I think you more than measure up.
You can ask Lori about the post-interview process and timeline. I would think one next step might be a meeting with David Bernhardt, the Deputy Secretary. Also, she will check with
Presidential Personnel to make sure you have no public record of opposing the President's election or programs.
Thanks, Scott Scott J. Cameron Acting Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management and Budget

Lori is moderately formal. I'd say a suit makes sense. If you are going to be interacting with much more senior officials as your job in PMB then it probably makes sense to dress to show some gravitas.

This is great, thank you so much!
I feel confident that I meet these requirements and can speak to them. As you know I was a Trump supporter early on, though I am not the campaigning type. Never was. Nor the rallying type. Just not me. I did however fly to (b) (6) to cast my vote.
Can you give me any sense of Lori's style? I feel like things are always more conservative and fancy during Replubican admin, and want to strike the right tone and don 't want to be either too overdone/formal or too casual.
Thanks again! Sincerely
