Goodell .Plant Manager Vohns-Manvllle Products Corporation Box 428 Marshville, North.Carolina 28103 Dear Bob: sThank you for your*letter, of February 3. . 1 enjoyed talking.,ttodF!you over the telephoned* n * <: ^ :;?< * -- 4 '/> "'v. Confirming conversation, I felt I should'be '.'brutally- frank" because I have been"---' involved with theasbestos problem as explored with your company at the New Jersey headquarters some years ago, as well as at other places. As you gathered from our conversation, we have been primarily interested in what could be done with regard to the spinning frame. Originally, we were asked to study the pick-up of the yarn and the collection of the retrieved fiber in a colli tor unit. Your approach is more general in that you have asked our company's ii as and proposal for improving your "fly" and dust collection in your plant. You mEi ltfoned the industrial health problem. It is my understanding that the invisible dust is the greatest health hazard and any information reaching us more or less confirms that this hazard is affec;ti!id very little, if any, by filters such as we use. I mentioned the fact that Garloc Packing had put on just our ordinary collector units and considered that they had he Iped the dust situation in the room. I feel that this approach could possibly scatti the invisible dust more than ever. He talked about putting a collector unit on bach frame or possibly two on each frame. These collector units could then exhai t into a PNEUMAFILTER or PNEUMAFILTERS. Virtually all of the visible dust taken in Lo the Pneumafil system should then be eliminated. The exhaust from the PNEUMAFIL,'T il1l R fan could be returned to the room through exhaust distribution ducts and dlffuso grills as is done in the PNEUMACARD installations. Of course, this possibly would |iean a further diffusing of the invisible particles through the air in the room. Y iu spoke of the possibility of circulating this exhaust air through a washer. This punds like the best chance of getting rid of some of this invisible dust, but we >uld take no responsibility on the efficiency of this method. Also, as discussed, I mentioned that our concept of the equipment applied to the frame would be most likely similar to our applications on Model "E" Whitin f sues. Because of the higher specific gravity of the material, we would use higher tntry velocities. I believe your frames are 140 spindles and you guess about 6" g mgs. C CRM1 3-M&S-003274 (gf Mr. Robert H. Goodell Page 2 February 5, 1969 Since there are no overhead cleaners, we could use two collector t nits per frame If necessary. Such Installations have run as high as between $1000 |nd $1500. I suggested that you budget $2000 per frame for your 18 spinning fri es and then let us see how much we can cut off of that later. Because of the nature of such an Installation, we would prefer not to get In it at all unless we got Into it on the right basis. To do a proper job - one that will reflect credit to us and be of value to you - we recommend and offer the services of our best qualified engineer on such a project at the rate of $11. 0 per hour plus expenses. Probably, he could make the survey for the spinning ro in one day, but It could possibly require a little more. Then If you wanted him o look at the balance of your mill and your other processes while he Is there and let you know the feasibility of our doing anything about these other departments, this phase would be at your option. Bob, I do not mean this letter to sound like I:know it does sound But, If anything is accomplished this round (and nothing has been accomplished herftofore), I think It will be because of this "hard facts" approach. From this polnf on, your correspondence should be with Mr. Chris Young, Sales Engineer for your geographical 1 location. However, anytime you want to ask me a question or contfict me for any reason, please feel free to do so. Best Regards, Sinci rely.
