Governor Scott Recognizes Two State Law Enforcement Officers with Governor's Medal of Heroism
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Today, during a meeting of the Florida Cabinet, Governor Rick Scott recognized Florida Highway Patrol Corporal John Schultz and Florida Division of Investigative and Forensic Services Detective Barry Lewis with the Governor's Medal of Heroism. During Hurricane Irma, Corporal Schultz and Detective Lewis responded to a fellow law enforcement officer's call for help while sheltering from the storm at his home in Fort Myers.
Governor Rick Scott said, "I'm proud to recognize Corporal Schultz and Detective Lewis and their heroic actions with the Medal of Heroism today. Our service men and women constantly put themselves in danger to help their fellow Floridians, and we should take every opportunity to thank them for their selfless actions to save lives before, during and following Hurricane Irma."

On September 10, 2017, Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Greg Bueno and his family took shelter from Hurricane Irma at his home in Fort Myers. During the storm, the home's ceiling collapsed and was surrounded by flood water and Lt. Bueno radioed for help. FHP Corporal John Schultz and DFS Detective Barry Lewis responded to the call and walked through the dark, flooded neighborhood to evacuate Lt. Bueno and his family. Due to the brave and selfless actions of Corporal Schultz and Detective Barry, Lt. Bueno and his family safely endured the storm.
