The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and its member companies--our nation's investor-owned electric companies--currently are working with numerous federal and state partners to address the growing challenge of wildfires and to identify ways to turn our energy grid into an early detection and response system for wildfires and other catastrophic events. To that end, CEOs and other senior executives from EEI's member companies will be in Washington July 25-26 and would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your team to discuss shared objectives.
Wildfires and other extreme weather events are occurring with increasing frequency and are having greater impacts on our nation's critical energy infrastructure and on the customers and the communities that we serve. Responding to these events requires investments from the private sector and from federal, state, and local governments in grid hardening, resilience, and adaptation. New regulatory tools for the management of physical risks also are needed. To help manage these increased risks and the attendant liabilities, EEI's member companies are exploring opportunities to work collaboratively with a diverse set of stakeholders.
Many electric companies are devising and implementing comprehensive wildfire mitigation plans. A vital component of mitigation and restoration is ensuring that our member companies have access to infrastructure to conduct routine maintenance, as well as emergency operations and maintenance. Technology developments and deployments will play a critical role in ensuring that, collectively, we can streamline wildfire prevention, detection, and suppression efforts. We believe these objectives align with DOI priorities.
Importantly, the July 25-26 dates also coincide with a meeting of the Wildland Fire Leadership Council (WFLC), which presents an additional opportunity for electric company executives to address the core issues of vegetation management and fire suppression efforts. Optimally, we hope to meet with you and your team, other senior officials from DOE and the USFS, as well as with the leaders in the WFLC process.
