Calvelli Importance: High October 3, 2017 The Honorable Aurelia Skipwith Deputy Assistant Secretary Fish, Wildlife and Parks U.S. Department of the Interior 1849 C Street NW Washington, D.C. 20240 Dear Deputy Assistant Secretary Skipwith: On behalf of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), I am writing to request the opportunity to meet with you on October 18th or 19th to discuss the importance of international conservation programs managed by the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in particular, to saving species threatened with extinction, strengthening governance and political institutions in Africa, Asia and Latin and South America, and furthering U.S. national security interests in these difficult regions. Trafficking in wildlife is one of the largest illicit activities worldwide, worth billions of dollars annually. Evidence increasingly shows that large scale trafficking is being conducted by transnational organized crime syndicates that move poached products like elephant ivory, rhino horn, tiger pelts, and many other products out of range states and into black markets in Asia, Europe and the United States. There are also strong indications that the illegal wildlife trade is being used as a source of financing for violent extremist groups in Africa and elsewhere, some of which have been tied to human rights atrocities and terrorism. The large scale illegal profits generated by the trade are also promoting corruption, undermining the rule of law and threatening U.S. investments in security and development. Because of the threat it poses to U.S. national security interests, President Trump placed wildlife trafficking alongside trafficking in humans, weapons and drugs in the Executive Order on Enforcing Federal Law with Respect to Transnational Criminal Organizations and Preventing International Trafficking shortly after taking office. WCS saves wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature. Founded in 1895 by Theodore Roosevelt as the New York Zoological Society at the site of the Bronx Zoo, which remains our flagship today, WCS and its five wildlife parks in New York City are visited by 4 million people annually, making it the largest network of urban wildlife parks in the world. WCS is also a global leader in protecting and promoting a world rich in wildlife and wild lands. WCS works in 16 priority landscapes encompassing almost 60 countries, whose landscapes account for about 50 percent of Earth's biodiversity, where we manage more than 200 million acres of protected area. My assistant, Geaner Parkes will be in contact with you soon to discuss your availability. Thank you for your consideration of my request. Sincerely, John F.
