The outlook for an ambitious Republican reform agenda is bleak at this point, to put it mildly.

What might have been
James C. Capretta | National Review Online
At this point, there probably isn't much that can be done to salvage the Republican legislative agenda. This presidency's controversies have made bipartisan cooperation all but impossible, and there isn't nearly enough unity in the GOP to pass charged legislation on partisan votes. Still, Republicans don't have much to lose by trying something different. They should abandon the idea of massive, sequential, partisan bills and start over with an approach straight from the Bill Clinton playbook: going all in on one omnibus package.

Charlottesville's irony
letai|Bi8ii|lfe
It's telling that Charlottesville, a small central Virginia city where Thomas Jefferson built the University of Virginia, will become the site that forces America to deal with who we are as a republic: divided and scared. But then Jefferson warned his victorious generation in 1787 that dissent and rebellion are always smoldering. Jefferson's words don't reverse the three deaths or dozens injured last weekend. They instead remind us that the road to freedom is painted in nasty and brutish brushstrokes.

conundrum (2015)
Last night, President Trump addressed the nation about his plans for the future of US engagement in Afghanistan. Two years ago, AEl's Fred Kagan addressed the House Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, laying out the challenge before America's leaders. "Enemy groups are both multiplying and gaining strength," he said. "Supporting the Afghan government requires more US troops and expanded authorities for those that are there."

An ominous how-to for a terrorist attack on American soil liaiiillfftfiiSilllTSi
The terrorist attack in Barcelona follows a pattern that has left more than 100 people dead and hundreds more injured in Nice, Berlin, London, Stockholm, and Ohio State University -- a terrorist takes a van or truck and plows through innocent pedestrians, turning the vehicle into "a mowing machine." Those words come from an article in a glossy online al Qaeda magazine, which provides detailed instructions for how to....... carry out these vehicular attacks.
