Hello Scott:
Thank you for agreeing to provide remarks at the Semiannual meeting of the Great Lakes Commission, next Wednesday, March 15 in Washington DC. As I indicated yesterday when we spoke, your willingness to step in is very much appreciated. At this point, I think it is highly unlikely that our other invitees will be confirming, so we are delighted to welcome you.
The latest copy of our agenda is attached. I have listed you at 3:15 PM on Wednesday, March 15, in the State Room at the Mayflower Hotel (1127 Connecticut Ave).
Could you please send along a brief bio that I can use to introduce you?
As far as your remarks go, I'd suggest you highlight some of DOI's priority activities in the Great Lakes region, including new work funded under the GLRI and the work of USGS and FWS. I have let Charlie Wooley from FWS know that we have invited you, and I will be contacting Leon Carl and Russ Strach from USGS to let them know. We would especially be interested in hearing anything you can share on Secretary Zinke's views and priorities, especially as they relate to resources held in trust and the role of states as partners in protecting and managing those resources. I know that with Mr. Zinke's background he is painfully familiar with the importance of invasive species. Anything you can say to highlight this as a priority for the Secretary and the agency would be welcome.
I'd be happy to provide you with additional suggestions on remarks if that would be helpful.
For additional background, you probably know this, but the Commission is made up of appointees from each of the eight states and two provinces. Most of our Commissioners are agency directors and gubernatorial appointees with some state legislators, an attorney general and several representatives of ports and maritime interests. There will be approximately 35 Commissioners seated around a U shaped table. In addition, we expect that another 100 or so leaders from across the Great Lakes region will attend the meeting, including federal agency staff, and leaders from regional agencies and organizations.
Thanks again. Please let me know if I can provide any additional background or assistance to help you prepare.
