These recommendations will then be given to the uadvisory committeeD discussed on our last conference call as their basis for finalizing the agenda. As things are shaping up, it appears that the advisory committee will be Dan Krewski, Bob Snyder, Betty Meeks (Health canada), Pat Beatty, someone from Bob Farland's office, and someone from CPPI (either Roger Keefe or Geoff Granville), as well as Jonathon Frisch and CeCe Sharp from API. Attached for your review are the following: - One page description (DRAFT) of tt:le purpose of the workshop - Draft agenda {used for discussion on our first conference call) - Draft list of proposed attendees Please..Jook these over and we will try to finalize our proposed agenda on a call next week. Institute of Population Health The purposes of the proposed workshop are two-fold: to review the current state of knowledge about benzene toxicity to identify data gaps and areas where further research would contribute meaningf-~;~lly to scientific understanding of the mechanism and extent of ben.-:ene's human toxicity To accomplish these goals. a group of promi-nent researchers, as well as representatives of government agen~;ie~-and industry, would be invited to participate in a 2 day meeting. which is env-isioned to include both plenary presentations on the state of the science and focused discussions on specific issues in benzene toxicity. While the agenda for the meeting will be established by the meeting host and sponsors, specific topic areas-t-hat have been discus~ed a:o-potential subjects for discussion include: benzene's mechanism of leukemogenesis (with special emphasis on relevant mechanisms of genotoxicity) the appropri-ate leukemia cell type for assessing benzene leukemia risk the significance of the NCI epidemiologic study of benzene workers in China what can be learned about benzene risk from other known secondary leukemogens A one-day "satellite" meeting has also been discussed, to occur either before or after the main workshop-;- at which Tony Cox's mathematical simulation model for hematotoxici1y would be discussed by a peer review panel of modelers, toxicologists and hematologists_ The workshop-\.vould serve as a stepping stone in the continuing evolution of the understanding of benzene, and is intendedio poteRt-ially lay the groundwork for a future, larger meeting at which state of the art sc~ent1fic research could be presented in a more comprehensive manner (similar to Ben.-:ene 95).
