Mr. Auer was deemed a success by me and I was most pleased by his national and international efforts with High Production Volume Chemicals. I was always intrigued that the program was never completed with a report regarding the INDUSTRY voluntary participation and our ability to collect missing information. In fact, a program that makes much more sense than reviewing and reviewing the same chemicals. Though I continue to be disappointed that Chem View treats all studies as meaningful and does not flag the chaff from the useful or meaningful data. NYT and others do not seem to realize that despite the expense of testing, repeats do little but change a few significant digits at best and provide little information on real impacts. The expense of this charade of more testing and further risk assessment serves little or no purpose. It brings to mind the concept of beating a dead horse! a chemical that is known to be toxic needs to be LABELED as such. TSCA should mirror FIFRA in labeling chemicals and let users know of known risks and are offered guidance on how to limit exposures. For example, taking effective chemicals from paint strippers means that one must use MORE of the ineffective and/or the risk of heat and possibility of fumes and fires. One truly can't find a riskless world --to borrow a phrase, " life itself is impossible without chemicals!" I congratulate you on your approach. Flame retardants do save lives. Dioxane is toxic. Carbon tetrachloride and asbestos are known international problems. We need to deal with the problems of use and exposure by foolish people. Education and outreach --not animal testing should be the focus. I have tested tens of thousands of animals from mice and rats to horses and see value in testing, but not testing to mollify the uninformed public. Keep up the good work. There are people that appreciate your efforts. PS. Dr. Stedeford is having a great time and has realized that working in TSCA land was an easy job. He is no longer coasting but being challenged, a very good man! Mark W Townsend 2017 tis FALL (where did summer go?) cell Ex. 6 Personal Privacy (PP) Sierra Club v.
