S Occupational Safety and Hoaith Admiru, Labor { 1910.1000 f 1910.1900 Air conumiMfiti. An employee's exposure to any ma terial listed in table Z-l, Z-2. or Z-3 of this section shall be limited in accord ance with the requirements of the fol lowing paragraphs of this section. (a) Table Z-l; (1) Jfolerial* trifA names preceded by "C"--Ceiling Values. An employee's exposure to any material In table Zi, the name of which is preceded by a *`C" (e.g,, c Boron trifluoride), shall at no time exceed the ceiling value given for that material In the table. (2) Other material*--8-hour time weighted averages. An employee's ex posure to any material in table Z-l, the name of which is not preceded by "C". in any 8-hour work shift of a 40hour work week, shall not exceed the 8-hour time weighted average given for that material in the table. (b) Table Z-2: (1) 2-hour time weighted averages. An employee's ex posure to any material listed in table Z-2. in any 8-hour work shift of a 40hour warir week, shall not exceed the 8-hour time weighted average limit given for that material in the table. <2) Acceptable ceiling concentra tions. An employee's exposure to a material listed in. table Z-2 shall not exceed at any time during an 8-hour shift the acceptable ceiling concentra tion limit given for the.material in .the table, except for a time period, and up to a concentration not exceeding the maximum duration and concentration allowed is the eolunurunder **accepta ble peak, above the accepta ble ceiling concentration lor in 8-hour shift". (3) Example. During an 8-hour work shift, an employee may be exposed to a concentration of Benzene above 25 p.pjn. (but never above 50 p.pjn.) only for a mavimttyn period of 10 minutes. Such exposure must be compensated by exposures to concentrations leas than 10 p/m so that the cumulative exposure for the entire 8-hour work shift does not exceed a weighted aver age of 10 p/m (c) Table Z-3: An employee's expo sure to any material listed in table Z3. in any 8-hour work shift* of a 40hour work week, shall not exceed the B-hour time weighted average limit given for that material in the table. <d) Computation formulae: (1) (i) The cumulative exposure for an 8-hour work shift shall be comput ed as follows: <s-ar.-eC,r.+ ... s Where: U the equivalent exposure for the work- ins shift. C ta the concentration durine an; period of time T where the concentration remains constant. T is the duration in hours of the exposure at the concentration C- The value of E shall not exceed the 8hour time weighted average limit in table Z-l. Z-2, or Z-3 for the material involved. <li) To illustrate the formula pre scribed in paragraph tdXlXl) of this section, note that isoamyl acetate has an 8-hour time weighted average limit of 100 p.pjn. (table Z-l). Assume that an employee is subject to the follow ing exposure: Two hours exposure at 150 p/m Two hours exposure at T5 p/m Pour hours exposure at 50 p/m Substituting this information In the formula, we have (2xl50*2x75-r4x50> * t-81.29 p/m Since 81-25 p.pjn. is less than 100 p p m-, the 8-^our time weighted aver age limit, the exposure Is acceptable. (2) (1) In case-of a mixture of air con taminant*,on* employer shall compute the equivalent exposure as follows: E.-<G*L.+C.-rU>-+ - . (C.-U) Where: Em is the equivalent exposure far the mixture. C is the concentration of a particular con taminant. L is the exposure limit for that contami nant, from table Z-L. Z-2. or Z-3. The value of Em shall not exeeed unity (1). (a) Scope and application. (1) This section applies to all occupational ex posures to asbestos, tremolite, antho- phyUlte, and actinollte, in all indus tries covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, except as pro vided in paragraph (eK2) of this sec tion. (2) This section does not apply to construction work as defined in 29 CFR 1910.12(b). [Exposure to asbes tos. tremolite, anthophyUite. and ac- tinoUte in construction work is covered by 29 CFR 1926.58.] (b) Definitions. "Action level" means an airborne concentration of asbestos, tremolite. anthophyUite, actinollte, or a combination of these of 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter (f/cc) of air calculated as an eight (8)--hour time- weighted average. "Asbestos" includes chryaotUe. amo- site. crocidoUte, tremolite asbestos. anthophyUite asbestos, actinollte as bestos. and any of these minerals that have been chemically treated and/or altered. - "Regulated area" means an area es tablished by the employer to demar cate areas where airborne concentra tions of asbestos, tremolite. antho- phyUlte, actinollte. or a combination of these exceed, or can rea sonably be expected to exceed, the permissible exposure limit. "Tremolite, anthophyUite. or aetino- Ute" means the non-asbestos form of these minerals, and any of these min erals that have been chemically treat ed and/or altered. (e) Permissible exposure limit (PEL). The employer ensure that no em ployee is exposed to an airborne con centration of asbestos, tremolite. anth ophyUite, actinollte, or a combination of these minerals in excess of 0.2 fiber per cubic centimeter of air as an eight (8>-hour time-weighted average (TWA) as determined by the method pre scribed In Appendix A of this section, or by an equivalent method.
