RE: RE: story out tomorrow
Thanks, Carey. You can attribute to "an EPA spokesperson," please, but the Agency does not normally comment on pending litigation and is represented by DOJ.
Best, R.

The meat of the documents - the new information - comes from FOIAs returned from EPA and HHS, but there are also conversations about this matter in the Roundup litigation documents. I hope to turn story in tonight or first thing tomorrow morning.

Thanks for reaching out. Do the documents you're referencing related to glyphosate? Also, have they been referenced in the current litigation in California?
Finally, since you say the story is out tomorrow, I take it your deadline is today close of business? Please advise.

Hey Robert - So I've been trolling through more FOIA dox and have put together a timeline that shows Monsanto and EPA officials Jim Jones, Jess Rowland and Jack Housenger working fairly actively to help Monsanto delay the ATSDR review that agency undertook in 2015, Monsanto first reaches out to Jim Jones in person and then in an email reminding him of their in person meeting and expressing the company's concern about the ATSDR review. Jim immediately jumps on it, finding the top person at HHS to have Jack Housenger talk to about the ATSDR review.
A long series of back and forth communications between EPA and ATSDR and Monsanto continue from May through October at which point EPA reports to Monsanto it has successfully gotten a "promise" from ATSDR to put its review on hold, Monsanto talks about not wanting the ATSDR review because ATSDR is more like IARC and very conservative.
Bloomberg reported just a tiny blip of this stuff from the lawyer documents released a couple weeks ago, but I've gotten the full picture from the FOIA documents from EPA and HHS that tell a much more complete story.
It's clear that Monsanto and EPA both pushed the same message with ATSDR and that Monsanto was worried about an ATSDR finding.
So my question for EPA is:
Was this proper for Jones and Housenger to reach out to ATSDR and try to convince that agency to delay its own review while being encouraged to do so by Monsanto?
Is this collusion or is this defined as some common cooperative effort?
I'd appreciate whatever you might want to say on this topic.
Best regards, Carey Gillam
