1977 November 15
November 8, 1977:
Samples of dust and gases (coal, tar, pitch) were taken over an eight
hour period. The sampling devices were clipped to the employee's
shirt In an attempt to measure the type and concentration normally
Inhaled by the employee. The following employee's were sampled:
1. (tetxfe-reb ; mixer operator, personal and area samples taken.
2. ; brickmason, personal sample only
3. eco/f erst ; crane operator, north crane Building 60, personal
and area sample taken

During this day the following items were pointed out to me by the OSHA Inspector:
1. The butt mill was not operating and he would come back and do more testing when it was reaplred.
2. The horn on the high crane in Building 56 was not operating. 3. Non approyed guarding of belt drive on J4, spreader vent fan. 4. No guard on J4 converyor head pulley. 5. Pointed out the possibility of the press operator being caught
In pinch points while cleaning out pit under press. 6. Noted excess oil mists in the press room.

November 9, 1977:
Sample of dust and gases (coal, tar, pitch) were taken over an eight hour period. The same sampling methods were used as the day before. The butt mill was not running for the first four hours of testing. When it was started up It literally covered up everyone in the area with heavy dust for approximately 40 minutes. The following employees were samples:
1. Rb*t-T.t> ; crane operator. Building 58 south crane, personal sample. 2. ABOactgo ; crane operator Building 58 north crane, personal
and area samples were taken. 3. AeOtcreb ; packer/puller Building 58, personal sample. 4. ABb/KJb ; packer/puller Building 58* personal sample. 5. AepAtreo ;; mixer operator, personal sample and area sample. 6. ASO/tcri> ; production helper, personal sample.
During this day the following items were pointed out to me by the OSHA inspector:
1. Questioned why we heat food out In the Baking Furnace area. 2. Questioned the number of employees using new Carbon Plant
lunchroom (too crowded). 3. Questioned why only one hot plate in same lunchroom. 4. Had favorable comments about shower. Building 35. 5. After hearing a complaint from an employee about the lunchroom
In the Electric Shop the inspector checked the lunchroom. The complaint was that odors and oil mists from the battery was area were coming through the wall and into the lunchroom. tgb/tcTcb Informed the Inspector that he had heard no complaints from his people and that the wash area was going to be moved to the new garage within weeks.

November 10, 1977
On this day, we went to the Potrooms, Line 2, Room 8. Oust and gas samples were taken form the following employees:
1. , personal sample plus sample from crane cab. 2. R0ACTE" ' T,c`c*' Person#1 s*nple. 3. ; H.T.C.C., personal sample. 4. ; piddler, personal sample. 5. , pot tender, personal sample. 6. . pot tender, personal sample.
During the day the following items were pointed out to me by the OSHA Inspector: 1. Unguarded hole in top of Potlining Building 127 above mixers. 2. If syphon cleaning is recognized as a high noise job why aren't more employees wearing ear potection as is posted. 3. Questioned speed of sweepers. Carbon Plant tractor drivers, towmotors, scooter. 4. Observed dusting while ore bucket was being filled at center (questioned spillage). 5. Observed "covering carbon" and commented on dust caused by this operation. 6. Observed potliners lancing metal pad from cradles. 7. Questioned the painting of hard hats.
November 11, 1977
On this day, personal samplers were placed on the following employees to measure respirable dusts:
1. Lsticreb >, 2nd class equipment operator at the crusher (operating fork truck).

2. QtDAcf Q . 2nd class equipment operator at crusher (operating a payloader).
3. , 2nd class equipment operator, (operating a sweeper).
The following items were pointed out to me by the OSHA Inspector:
1. Aisles, for traffic or pedestrians, are not painted on either West,
Center nor East passageways.
2. The practice of placing anode rods (butts) against pot steps
would be considered a serious violation If he were doing an
OSHA Inspection.
3. There was no indication of Inspection or testing of chain or
wire rops slings and 4-ways.

4. Unstable method of carrying metal pads from Courtyard 19 to
Ingot would be considered a serious violation.
5. Questioned me briefly as to vehicle and crane operator training
programs.

November 17, 1977
On this day, we went to Potroom 132 where personal samples were taken from

Raring the day, the following items were pointed out to me by the OSHA

inspector:
1. Employees using crustbreakers were not wearing ear protection. 2. 90 psi air used for cleaning pot shell. 3. 90 psi air used for cleaning superstructure. 4. 90 psi air used for cleaning off A-398 bag clamps. 5. Plant air compressors in Building 27G have no C02 alarm systems. 6. Portable air compressors have no C02 alarm system. 7. Crane ladder on West 132 crane 8. 90 psi air used by an enployee to blow dust from his clothes. 9. Pot Tender eating lunch while sitting on his section. 10. Hoses for compressed gas bottles do not have proper clamps to hold
them on (3,000 psi).

November 18, 1977
On this day, we went to Pot 22, Room 16 where the potlining crew was cleaning
out the pot stall. Ihe following potlining employees were sampled for
asbestos exposure: (1)
> Leadman, and (2)dP, Potlining
Helper.
We also placed respiratable dust samplers on the following employees at the
ore unloading area: (1) fi.60Ac.T&o
car unloading area, (2) net>6ct&c>
car unloading area and clean up on lower level, and (3)*?o/fTtrb ore
bridge clean vp man.
Personal samplers were also put on Bag Changers /t0&c.re=t> Both of these people were involved in vacuuming out the upper plenum of A-398 52N.
During the day, the following items were pointed out to me by the OSHA inspector
1. 3M8500 mask is not acceptable for use in our plant. 2. 3m*710 may not be the mask to use in asbestos exposures.
