= fijNSUMER ( Single large Dose of Cardnogen May Be Hazardous, Says CPSC Results of tests involving the administration of single and multiple doses of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) to rats and mice indicate for the first time that inhaling a single high dose of a known carcinogen may cause cancer in animals, according to a recent Consumer Product Safety Commission news release. The study, which was performed under contract for the Commis sion, revealed that both malignant and benign pulmonary tumors were com mon in mice that had inhaled single large doses (5,000 p. p. m. and 50,000 p. p. m.) of VCM gas. Tumors were not produced in the rats tested, and VCM reproduction studies conducted simultaneously did not show mutagenic or teratogenic effects in generations of the laboratory animals. Vinyl chloride, banned by the Commission and other federal agencies in 1974, was used as a propellant in such aerosol products as spray paints, solvents, hairsprays, and pesticides. The chemical is still used to produce the plastic polyvinyl chloride and is subject to workplace exposure levels set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The study is expected to spur further research of single-dose exposure and to elicit scientific review that will aid in evaluating how the study's finding will affect the regulatory activities of various federal agencies. Copies of the draft summary report of the VCM inhalation study may be requested from the Commission's Office of the Secretary, Room 300, 1111 18th Street, NW., Washington, DC 20207; telephone 202 634-7700. Defect Proceedings Started for Asbestos-Containing Hair Dryers A preliminary determination that a substantial hazard is presented by hand-held hair dryers containing asbestos has been made by the staff of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Defect notices for 11 manufacturers and retailers of such dryers state that remedial action should be undertaken to address the potential hazard of an increased risk of cancer. The defect notices will be reproduced in an early Report.
