SAFETY WORK PROCEDURE
cause of the possibility of medical problems arising from prolonged exposure to high ;,;ncentrations of asbestos fibers, asbestos-free materials are being used for all new
isulation work at the Uorco Manufacturing Complex. Insulation purchased prior to 1S73 ,iy be regarded as likely to contain asbestos.
..r.oval, handling, and disposal of old insulation material that may contain asbestos ;;.ould be conducted in a manner to avoid release of dust. These procedures which must u followed when handling asbestos containing insulation should Include the following:
1. Any unidentified insulation must be treated as though it contains asbestos. Projects involving a significant amount of insulation may justify taking a test sample for asbestos determination testing.
3. "Major" demolitions or renovations of asbestos materials require a written notice of the job be sent to the Environmental Protection Agency before the work is begun. The Engineering Field or Maintenance Department should supply the Shell Environmental Conservation Department the necessary infor mation. Environmental Conservation will notify the Regulatory Agency. Waste asbestos insulation in property sealed, marked containers shall be disposed of in accordance with requirements of the Environmental Conservation Depart ment.
3. Insofar as practicable, asbestos materials shall be handled and worked in a wet state so as to prevent the emission of airborne fibers.
Whenever it is necessary to work with asbestos, respirator protective equip ment is required. This will be either an approved dust respirator (for example BM 9910) or pressure-demand airline equipment. Full body protective clothing (preferably disposable) shall be worn by all employees engaged in the asbestos work.
An appropriate work area shall be roped off to warn oth^r employees to take necessary protective steps before entering the area.
.. I Jo asbestos material shall be cut with power tools due to the release of ex cessive asbestos fibers into the air.

7. Asbestos waste will be disposed of by placing into impermeable plastic bags while still wet to prevent fiber release. Disposable clothing shall also be placed in these bags after they are used. All such bags are to bear the appropriate OSHA or EPA labels. These sealed bags shall be placed in drums to minimize puncturing which could result in release of fibers during trans port.
j. Asbestos containing insulation shall not be recovered for reuse. As asbestos free insulation is installed on equipment, appropriate labeling of the equip ment (bands and/or stenciling for major pieces, stenciling for piping) shall be provided by Maintenance or Engineering Field as a part of the material in stallation. Engineering Services should mark pertinent plot plans to indicate major equipment with non-asbestos insulation.
'i. Safety and Industrial Hygiene will continue to conduct both area and personnel air monitoring to determine any asbestos levels.
