We hosted over twenty members of Congress, several hundred attendees, and enjoyed food and beverages from western states prior to the State of the Union. Special thank you's to the following congressional offices for donating food and drinks from their home states for the event: Congressman Don Young for providing local AK Brewery beer from Alaska. Congressman Gianforte's contribution of various types of Montana beer. Congressman Newhouse donated Washington State Cougar Gold cheese. Congressman Walden provided Oregon smoked salmon. Congressman Gosar provided Arizona Stronghold wine. And Senator Daines contributed elk summer sausage and bison salami. We would also like to recognize Lucas Oil, Protect the Harvest, Bloomberg Government, and Pinnacle West for their support. House Policy Retreat Review: Capitol Hill Club: February 9, 2018 The Western Caucus Foundation held our annual House Staff Policy Planning Retreat with a wide range of dynamic speakers. During the session, both speakers and guests discussed ideas on how to create impactful legislation benefiting Western States. A shout out to our guest speakers: Kiel Weaver (Policy Assistant for Speaker Ryan); Todd Willens (Assistant Deputy Secretary, DOI); Glenn Casamassa (Associate Deputy Chief, USDA); Cody Stewart (Staff Director, Natural Resources); Tim Pataki and Mike Catanzaro (White House Staff); Byron Brown (Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, EPA); Myron Ebel (Competitive Enterprise Institute and EPA Transition Director); and keynote speaker Douglas HoltzEakin (President, American Action Forum). Holtz-Eakin's in depth knowledge on economic issues gave the audience a deeper clarity and understanding on tax reform as well as the broader implications of a government shutdown. As both an economist and a scholar, Holtz-Eakin taught staffers about ways they could enrich the economy of their state through subtle changes. And those changes in the long run would create advancement in all policy areas of the West.
