Waukesha Bearings Rep. was requested to attend vessel for re conditioning of stern tube seal due to propeller damage.
Vessel arrived at approx. 1430 6 Nov. 73, at Newport News Shipbuilding and DryDock Co. Vessel moored stbd side to pier,
stern end in. Vessel was approx. 6% hrs. late on arrival.
Approx. 1800, 6 Nov. 73, commenced tipping bow down.
Upon completion of tipping vessel shipyard moved barges around stern and rigged staging. Visual inspection of inboard seal re vealed oil leakage from around oil line and petcock valve. No oil leakage visible outboard.
FIRST WORK CARRIED OUT:
1. Drained oil from stern tube. 2. Removed shaft alley interference. 3. Removed coupling bolts intermediate shafting. 4. Removed fairwater cap. 5. Shipyard and Repair Inspector checked runout on tailshaft.
Found satisfactory. 6. Removed intermediate shafting. 7. Loosened propeller nut and jumped propeller. 8. Drew in tailshaft. 9. Made visual inspection of stern tube bearings. Found stern
tube bearings satisfactory. Measured journals and I.D. of stern tube bearings and recorded same. See attached sketch of same.

Removed stern tube seal assemblies from vessel and sent to inside machine shop with spare seal rings, "0" rings and locking plates. Made preparations to remove old propeller and install new propeller.
WORK CARRIED OUT IN MACHINE SHOP:
1. Removed liners from seals and inspected same. Shipyard run dial indicators over liners and it was felt liners were not grooved as to require machine work. See attached sketch of same. Liners then cleaned and degreased.
2. Disassembled inboard seal noting condition of seal rings as lightly heat checked. Cleaned and degreased all parts.
3. Installed new Viton seal rings and set garter springs at 85". 4. Installed liner into seal rings and made up shipping clips.
Wrapped seal in polyethelene and sent to vessel. 5. Disassembled outboard seal. Found seal cavity full of mud.
Seal rings were found soft and pliable. 6. Cleaned and degreased all parts. Installed new Viton seal
rings and set garter springs at 84%". 7. Placed seal assembly over nose of liner and made up shipping
clips. Wrapped outboard seal in polyethelene and sent to vessel.
WORK CARRIED OUT ABOARD VESSEL:

Magnifluxed tailshaft and passed by parties concerned. Opened sump tank. Cleaned sump tank and stern tube. Hung inboard seal adrift on tailshaft and brought tailshaft out to stern tube eye. Hung new propeller in arch. Obtained fit and passed by parties concerned. Hung outboard seal adrift and brought out tailshaft. Made up propeller nut and hardened and passed by parties con cerned . Made up intermediate shafting. Made up outboard seal.
Made up inboard seal and set "U" dimension at lh".
Filled stern tube with Exxon Mar 56 and conducted 4 hour static head test. Proved negative oil leakage in seal cavities. Filled seals with oil. Took weardown and recorded 11 Nov. 73: Top 109.9 mm Bottom 110.1 mm,,

Welded on ropeguard. Trimmed vessel. Align inboard liner as follows: .005" Face.

Jofc> considered complete. Repair Inspector informed WBC Rep. that he wanted WBC Rep. present during dock trials. This would be accomplished upon completion of repairs to main engine throttle valve which was being opened up for further repairs.
Completed repairs to throttle valve at 0430, 11 Nov. 1973. Commenced warming up turbines at 0450. 0500 to 0530 conducted dock trials at 20 RPM ahead and astern. Tested main engines and stern tube seals satisfactory with no oil leakage. Repair Inspector satisfied with test and released WBC Rep.
Vessel proceeded to get underway at 0700, 11 Nov. 73 enroute Baytown, Texas.
