Dear Leila,
America's natural gas and oil industry is one of the nation's most reliable job creators - supporting 10.3 million American jobs. And opportunities are expected to grow. As many as 1.9 million job opportunities are projected in the oil and natural gas and petrochemical industries by 2035, according to a recent study. Nearly 40 percent of those opportunities will be filled by African American and Hispanic workers, the study finds, and hundreds of thousands of women will join the industry, too.
The industry is committed to building a diverse workforce, and we're working to raise awareness and support education programs that could drive these numbers even higher. That includes reaching out to millennials, who have bright prospects in the natural gas and oil industry. API conducted a study to examine industry opportunities for millennials, and the results confirm millennials will play an increasingly prominent role in our sector.
In 2015, millennials accounted for more than one third of the natural gas and oil industry workforce, a nearly identical percentage to the overall U.S. economy at 35 percent. By 2025, millennials will be nearly 41 percent of our workforce - a 20 percent increase. The study also finds that millennials as a group are more diverse and better educated than previous generations, offering a broad range of skills, intellect, creativity and perspectives that foster the innovation and collaboration our industry thrives on.
Average pay in the natural gas and oil industry is nearly $50,000 higher than the U.S. average salary. But that's not the only reason energy careers are appealing. We offer a wide range of opportunities for a variety of interests and skills - from petroleum engineer, geologist, welder and electrician positions traditionally associated with the industry, to technology-driven jobs like data scientist and software developer. The same groundbreaking innovations that enhance the industry's efficiency, safety and environmental protection also promise exciting employment opportunities for rising, tech-savvy generations.
A career within our sector means being part of an industry that is essential not only to the national economy but to American families - supplying reliable energy that helps reduce household costs and produce items essential for modern daily life. From life-saving medical devices to cosmetics, from plastics in our toys and cell phones to 3-D printers, natural gas and oil boost innovations that support prosperity and discovery. Harnessing the energy, technological prowess and the innovative spirit of the next generation will be critical to achieving progress on societal and environmental goals and delivering energy reliably and affordably for decades to come.
Sincerely,
Jack N. Gerard President & CEO API
