Gov. Scott's Proposal to Prohibit Investments with Maduro Regime Filed in the Legislature
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Today, Governor Rick Scott thanked Florida House Speaker pro tempore Jeanette Nunez and Senator Rene Garcia for filing legislation to prohibit the State of Florida, including all state agencies, from investing in any company that is doing business with Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro's oppressive government. The legislation filed today, SB 538 and HB 359, follows Governor Scott's proposal announced at the 2017 Latin American Summit earlier this month. Earlier this year, the SBA unanimously approved Governor Scott's proposed resolution to prohibit the State of Florida from investments connected to the Maduro regime.
Governor Scott said, "This past Sunday, the will of the Venezuelan people was again suppressed by the oppressive Maduro regime through an untrustworthy election process. Florida is proud to advocate for true democracy and human rights that the people of Venezuela deserve, and against the tactics Nicolas Maduro uses to stay in power. Earlier this month, I proposed additional measures to hold the regime accountable by prohibiting all state agencies from investing in the oppressive Venezuelan government, and I'd like to thank House Speaker pro tempore Jeanette Nunez and Senator Rene Garcia for leading this effort through the Florida Legislature."
House Speaker Richard Corcoran said, "The world is witnessing the evils of socialism in our own hemisphere. The once successful and competitive nation is being destroyed by an ideology that is morally, economically, and politically bankrupt. The State of Florida should do all it can to bring down the Maduro regime. I commend Governor Scott for his leadership on this issue and Speaker pro tempore Nunez for her hard work and her dedication to freedom."
Speaker pro tempore Jeanette M. Nunez said, "I'm proud to lead this legislation through the House and support the people of Venezuela in their fight for freedom. I'd like to thank Governor Scott for leading our state on this important issue and together we will keep fighting every day to bring democracy to the hardworking families of Venezuela. The Florida House will continue to work with the Governor and our partners in the Senate to move this legislation forward."
Senator Rene Garcia said, "This important legislation shows that Florida continues to stand strong against the brutal Maduro regime and any business that supports their oppressive leadership. We will
