Mr. W. G. Hughes c/o Tenneco Chemical CompanyPost Office Box 2 Piscataway, New Jersey 08854
Dear Mr. Hughes:
loo
Subject: ClaRite filtration equipment
Thanks very much for your telephone call today. We discussed the potential interest in utilization of our ClaRite filtration equipment in a simplex or duplex configura tion and processing an aqueous waste stream containing particles of PVC, some of which is only partly polymerized with the stream a minimum of 70 and a maximum of 150 gpm for a 24-hour per day plant operation, in your facility at Burlington, New Jersey.
We understand that at present, there are some "homemade" screening facilities in use at the plant involving 1/8" opening size mesh equivalent, and that this retention rated media does a somewhat acceptable job in protecting against fouling of a trayfitted distillation column plus some heat transfer devices.
The suspended particulates in the waste stream have a wide range of particle size, and some of the material has a tendency to be on the "soft" side with consequent prospect for media fouling, etc. For this reason, we understand you wish to con sider the possibility of renting some equipment to be used at the plant for testing.
The illustration near the center of page 18 of our Catalogue 7IF, enclosed, shows a few small test units typical of those we normally rent at a cost of $125. 00/month, or part thereof, f. o. b. Stamford, Connecticut, with freight to and from the user's plant for the account of the renter. When we do rent, we ship out an assortment of interchangeable "Wedge Wire" tubular filtering element assemblies, having widths of helical slot opening ranging from .001" or so to as large as .010". Other aspects of the rental units we have available are as illustrated on the enclosed Drawing, C-54069.
Our rental equipment is shipped out in boxes which must be saved for use in return ing our apparatus to us, or we reserve the right to bill you for their replacement cost. Also, should there be any damage done to our equipment while in your possession we reserve the right to bill you for our cost to repair or replace said damaged equip ment.

We will provide suggestions regarding means for operating the rental equipment so that your plant personnel will gain maximum utilization of the apparatus and gen erate a substantial amount of test data, thus enabling them to be able to project the size and number of full-scale units which they will determine will be necessary to install in order to resolve the waste solution problem at hand.
We understand that at the end of an operating cycle, it will be desired to wash the "cake" by forward pumping water through the unit, following which it will be desired that the unit be backwashed. We confirm that Model S-4-05 rental filters are cur rently available and that we should, therefore, be able to make shipment within one (1) week following receipt of a rental purchase order.
For insurance purposes, should you wish to indemnify yourselves against loss of our equipment while it is in your possession under a rental arrangement, we wish to advise that the value of the equipment we will make available to you at the above agreed rental charge, is approximately $1,000.00.
Again, Mr. Hughes, we thank you for being in touch with us. By copy of this letter, we are notifying our agents in the vicinity of your Burlington plant of the existence of the waste processing problem there, and suggesting that shortly following their receipt of their letter copy, they be in touch with Paul Sheiner, at the plant, to offer their interest and assistance in connection with the resolution of the problem particularly in view of the great urgency associated with the need for it being resolved.
Very truly yours.
