Building OC-1120 Freeport, Texas 77541 Dear Bob: I enjoyed the opportunity of seeing you, albeit briefly in Boston last week. Dr. Brian Bennett of ICI, who presented a lecture at the Vinyl Chloride Safety Association Meeting on September 29th also visited with me in Wayne on October 5th. As you will recall from my letter of June 26th to you, I had sent the information, that you had provided me on Dr. Robert Waggener's course and statements relating to vinyl chloride worker mortality rates to Dr. Bennett. He has provided me with a copy of his letter of August 3rd to Professor Waggener, a copy of which you received earlier, and he has provided Dr. Waggener with considerable information to hopefully correct the mis-information that he appears to be purveying. Dr. Bennett informed me that he felt that any further contact with Dr. Waggener would not be fruitful, and as a matter of fact, he has not received a response to his August 3rd letter. Perhaps Dr. Waggener's course can be monitored in the future to see whether he corrects this mis-information. I hope all of this is useful to you, and if we can be of further help, please let me know. Since my return, Dr. Harris Pastides has written to me about IARC / Leukaemias, and I have sent him the information. I have also written to IARC, suggesting that I visit them, in order to look at their systems. The reason why I did this is that Dr. Simonato offered me this kind invitation while I was in Venice in June. I personally do not feel that the meeting will be of value, but EVC feel that I should visit them, as I appear to be the only individual who has a reasonable rapport with them and, in fact, they do listen to what I have to say. (This is probably due to them wanting something from me - the ASL Register). I will keep you informed of any developments that occur as a result of the Multi-Centre Study. Since returning, I have given a great deal of thought to our conversation, and really feel that there is little point in approaching EVC, as you suggested, because I have already tried this in the past. With kind regards. Yours sincerely. B BENNETT M.A., M.B., B.Ch., B.a.0. D.Obst.R.C.O.G. D.I.H. M.F.O.M. R.C.P.I. M.F.O.M. Box 4 Thornton-Cleveleys Blackpool FY 5 4QD England Dear Brian: Thank you for your letter of May 19, 1989 and please excuse my delay in responding but I have just recently returned to the office after a two-week holiday and am just catching up on items that appeared during my absence. I would be very pleased to meet with you on Thursday, October 5th at our Wayne offices if this is compatible with your schedule. Alternatively, I could come into New York City, if that would be more convenient for you. I enclose a letter that I have written to Mr. Robert Oubre of the Dow Chemical Company in response to his letter to me of June 14th. I also enclose a copy of this letter and the attachments thereto. My letter to Bob is self-explanatory and I hope that you would be able to arrange to visit with or talk with Dr. Robert Waggener and correct this information concerning the hazards and mortality rates of vinyl chloride. Please let me know whether this will be possible. X will once again, be speaking after the Vinyl Chloride Safety Associifction Meeting, this time in Boston on Thursday, September 28th. I will look forward to hearing from you and as in the past, look forward to seeing you in the near future. I am delighted that we shall be able to meet and, as agreed by 'phone yesterday, I will arrange to come to your Wayne Offices at around 10 a.m., on the morning of Thursday, 5th October. We can finalise the arrangements when we meet up at the Vinyl Chloride Safety Association Meeting in Boston. I wonder if Dr. Waggener would also be free on the 5th, so that we discuss his queries concerning Vinyl Chloride. Perhaps you could contact him concerning this? I am certainly looking forward to seeing you again when I visit the States. With kind regards. Yours sincerely. B BENNETT M.A., M.B., B.Ch., B.a.O. DObs t.R.C.O.G. D.I.H. M.F.O.M. R.C.P.I. M.F.O.M. If the resume of Dr. Waggener's talk is accurate, then he is clearly stating that all the 30000 workers exposed to vinyl chloride prior to regulation will eventually die as a result of that exposure. That is what is meant by the mortality rate being 100%. Obviously, the best way to improve his understanding of the real facts would be to acquaint him with the ASL Register. This really proves the importance of having kept the Register so accurately over the years, and confirms that the help of the PVC Industry is necessary and essential. As mentioned in my recent letter, I would be very happy to meet with Dr. Waggener, or talk to him, to discuss this, during my visit to the States. I am looking forward very much to renewing our acquaintance. Kind regards. Yours sincerely, B BENNETT M.A., M.B., B.Ch., B.a.O. D.Obst.R.C.O.G. D.I.H. M.F.O.M. R.C.P.I. M.F.O.M. Box 4 Hillhouse Site Thornton Cleveleys Blackpool FY5 40D, England Dear Brian: Thank you for your letter of July 19th. We will look forward to your visit at our Wayne offices on October 5th, and when I meet you in Boston at the Vinyl Chloride Safety Association Meeting, we can discuss your travel to our offices. I presume you will be staying in New York City. With regard to contacting Dr. Waggener, I would strongly urge that you contact him by mail prior to your visit and discuss with him the information which I have already provided you. In that fashion, during the forthcoming two months, you could develop a packet of information to provide him. I believe that this will be far more useful than a telephone conversation with him, as he is not in the immediate area. As you know from my prior correspondence, he is located at the University of Texas Health Center in San Antonio, Texas, and if your travels in the United States should take you to that area, a personal visit would certainly be helpful too. In any event, I hope you will contact him and try to correct his mis-information concerning vinyl chloride. I look forward to seeing you soon. Kindest personal regards.
