GASKET REMOVAL PROCEDURE CLASS II "GENERIC"
NON-GLOVE BAG PROCEDURE
Purpose
Procedures to be used when the asbestos gasket can be removed by hand and using minimal scraping.
Regulatory Requirements
The following regulatory requirement must be met before job is performed using this procedure:
Competent person must be available if needed. This person is in the vicinity of the job or can be reached by phone and within short traveling distance from job. (See Appendix A - IH Asbestos Compliance Module 01)
Negative Exposure Assessment is required to perform job.
Area must be demarcated using tape or barricades to limit access to area.
Required work practices and controls regardless of exposure
1. Wet methods or wetting agents, to control employee exposures during asbestos handling, removal, and cleanup.
2. Prompt clean-up and disposal of all waste and debris contaminated with asbestos in leak-tight containers.
Proper training for Class II "generic" work (8-hour)
Equipment Required If a Negative Exposure Assessment is available the following safety equipment and

other equipment listed, but not limited to, is required for the non-glove bag
procedure:
Minimum safely equipment required in the area
Demarcation tape - can be one of the following
red tape with danger/asbestos imprinted, or
yellow tape with green tags, or
folding floor stands stating "Potential Asbestos Hazard Area Do Not Enter"
Asbestos labeled bags (can be 2 gallon Ziplock freezer bag with asbestos label if gasket is 6 inch or smaller)
Labeled container in shop area for disposal of ACM material

Equipment Required (NEA Not Available)
If a Negative Exposure Assessment is not available the following safety equipment and other equipment listed, but not limited to, is required for the non-glove bag procedure:
Minimum safety equipment required in the area
1. Respirators - Half face equipped with HEPA filter-
Use of respirator requires medical approval and fit testing documentation
Proper training in the use of the respirator and documentation of training.
2. Protective clothing (disposable coveralls)
Demarcation tape - can be one of the following:
Barricade Tape with "DANGER - Asbestos Cancer and Lung Disease Hazard. Authorized Personnel Only - Respirators and Protective Clothing Are Required In This Area.", or
Folding floor stands stating "DANGER - Asbestos Cancer and Lung Disease Hazard. Authorized Personnel Only - Respirators and Protective Clothing Are Required In This Area."
Asbestos labeled bags (can be 2 gallon Ziplock freezer bag with asbestos label if gasket is 6 inch or smaller, other wise use asbestos waste disposal bag)
Labeled container in shop area for disposal of ACM material
Establishment of hygiene facilities/decontamination area
Impervious drop cloth - 6 mil poly
General Requirements
The following are general requirements for performing the job:
Inform block personnel that asbestos containing material will be removed in the area.
Must obtain safe work permit
NOTE:
Never use compressed air to remove asbestos materials.

Procedure
The following is the procedure to be used during non-glove bag removal of asbestoscontaining gaskets.

Ensure all supplies and equipment needed to perform the job is available
Demarcate or tape off the area in which the job will be performed
Wet gasket material before, during and after removal.
Note: If amended water cannot be used - contact designated competent trained person for assistance. (See Appendix A - I.H. Asbestos Compliance Module 01)
4. Remove gasket material carefully using a hand scraper to insure gasket does not breakup.
5. Place gasket in an asbestos labeled bag or container.
A 2 gallon Ziplockfreezer bag with an asbestos label affixed on it can be used in the field ifthe gaskets are 6 inches or smaller or an approved asbestos labeled bag can be usedfor larger gaskets. The Ziplock containing the gasket must be placed in an approved container when employee has returned to disposal area.
6. The container may be a barrel with a lid and a poly asbestos labeled bag as a liner. Once bag or container in which gaskets are discarded is partially full the top of the bag must be twisted, goose necked and sealed using duct tape.
7 Place the sealed labeled bag in a second asbestos labeled bag for storage and shipment to a approved disposal site.
